  1. The book series “His Dark Materials” is amazing. It good to see they are finally coming to film. I didn’t think they could do it, but so far the trailer looks amazing and very similar to the first book. Plus, the cast is phenomenal. It will be interesting to see how religious fanatics will react (just as bad as they do with Harry Potter?) and if they’ll even see the movie.

  2. I read this trilogy, and it was a battle to get through it. So was the source material, Paradise Lost. The movie looks good, though, and I really want to see it. I don’t think the themes in the book were too adult for children, since children should be exposed to difficult situations and concepts, not just pie in the sky Disney-esque storytelling. Children used to learn about the real world in violent fairy tales, so I have no problems with the themes in the book. The first book was my favorite.

  3. Well, if it is the first of three movies, that cast will kick buttocks.

I’ll admit the books kind of surprised me. I thought it was just a kid’s story… then it got more complex right at the end of the first book through to the third.

If they do treat this as a series and make a movie of “The Subtle Knife” that, I think, would be pretty awesome visually.

As would a movie of the third book.

  4. That was really uninspiring. I’ll definitely wait for reviews before considering seeing this now.
And did anyone notice how badly Dakota Blue Richards lines’ were delivered? I hope those lines in the trailer weren’t a full indication of her entire performance. If so, then…ouch. I didn’t feel an ounce of emotion in her voice. I know she’s a child and this is her first film, but damn….

  5. Was that Ian McKellen as the voice of the bear? That’s…….weird!

I’m afraid i wasn’t sold by it at all. It looks like Dune meets the DaVinci Code while trying really hard to be the next Rings. But i’ll give it a go.

  6. This is going to be a hard sell to little kids. This trailer makes it look exciting, but that Comic-Con footage was damn near sleep inducing, and if the film is as “adult” as the CC footage appears, I’m telling you, you will not have to worry about kids talking through the film. They’ll all be snoring instead. Funny how in that CC footage they kept referring to the compass as an alethiometer(if that’s how you spell it) and in this footage, they make sure to say COMPASS COMPASS over and over. I dunno. The books supposedly have a massive following, but so did Eragon allegedly, and look what happened there. Then again, that movie didn’t have the cast that this one has. My interest is piqued, but I’m not 100% sold yet.

  7. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Oops, sorry about that – fell asleep during that boring trailer. Is it just me that’s sick of all these cruddy, playing-safe fantasy sagas? Look at the trailers for Lord Of The Rings – they’re full of urgency, suspense. This Golden Compass one is just static, with bad acting and slow sweeping shots to show off the visual effects budget. But where’s the excitement?! Plus, Ian McKellen’s voice is – for me – a massive distraction. Obviously New Line are trying to cash in on his LOTR fanbase.
