Green Day To Cover Simsons Theme For Movie

gr33nday.jpgInteresting news about the Simpsons movie. It appears that Green Day will be suppling a version of the Simpson’s theme for the upcoming film. We get the following news from The Hollywood Reporter:

The traditional score soundtrack is dead. Sort of. What it desperately needs is reinvention. Fox Music president Robert Kraft, award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, Extreme Music and the gurus behind “The Simpsons” brand are trying to do just that.

The question is: If consumers aren’t into little shiny round discs anymore, what will they buy? Digital downloads? Sure, especially if it’s Green Day’s version of the “Simpsons” theme. A digital score album? Perhaps. A very cool limited-edition Homer pink doughnut clamshell case with the score CD to “The Simpsons Movie” inside. Why not?

I am not sure why Green Day was chosen to do the Simpsons theme. It is an instrumental song and Green Day is a Punk Rock band. If anything they should of got a band like the Ventures that excel at instrumental covers. Then again, I am judging the selection on the best artistic choice and not the ability to sell records.

The SImpsons film is not a movie I am pumped to see, but I am interested and curious to see how they pull it off.. I think The Simpsons has a great writing team and I am interested to see what the collective genius can produce in the feature film format.

  1. An argument can be made that Green Day is currently the biggest band in the world. Warning in my opinion was a pretty poor album. Dookie and American Idiot are works of art, even if some of the songs are repetitive, but they are still fun to listen to. I know some people who really don’t like Green Day, but say some songs like Basket Case or Longview are magnificient! Oh, and finaljoe, that song in Austin Powers is called “Espionage”.

  2. I’m sure it’s cool to think that a now popular band’s earlier, lesser know work is the best they’ve done, but anyone who thinks the simple, repetitive music of Green Day’s earlier albums (which were more often than not about drugs) is better than their diverse, substantial and rich music of Warning and American Idiot is tonally deaf or an imbecile.

But why are they doing The Simpson’s theme? Elfman’s theme is the most recognizable in TV history and shouldn’t be messed with. And why the hell is hack r’us Hans Zimmer doing the score?

Green Day have done instrumental tracks in the past, btw. One for the Austin Powers 2 soundtrack if I remember correctly.

  3. I personally think Dookie was their best album, but American Idiot could be their piece d’resistance. It’s debatable. I just think the old stuff is better.

  4. Green Day has grown on me with each album. I had a strong dislike for them when I was younger, but they are a band that seems to get better with time. Most bands get worse, they go against that grain – like salmon.

  5. Doug, the reason (I think the only reason) why Green Day is covering The Simpsons song is because they are in the movie. Watch the theatrical trailer and see if you can spot them. Green Day is a great band, one of my favorites, and I can’t wait to see what they do with this song. They also did one of the Austin Powers songs (just so you know).
