Pirates of the Caribbean 4 To Be A Spin-off?

Pirates-Fat-RushWith the release of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 rapidly approaching, people are already starting the speculations about Pirates of the Caribbean 4. The big speculation floating around today is the idea that the next Pirates movie may indeed be a spin-off of sorts and go on without Johnny Depp. I picked up on this from our friends over at Cinema Blend who give us this:

Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer says the fourth movie may actually be a spin-off instead. He says, “This is the end [of the current trilogy], but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it’s a possibility.” That statement was later backed up by Geoffrey Rush, who even went so far as to hint that the thing may go on without Johnny Depp. Since he’s the one saying it, you’ve got to wonder if maybe they’ll shift the focus to his character, Captain Barbosa.

Ok, now no one is going to like what I have to say here… but… IF you must make a fourth installment of the Pirates franchise… I say going off in a different direction and focusing on different characters is the way to go. Pirates 2 pretty much ruined the Captain Jack character for me anyway (he went from a swashbuckling, eccentric, complex morally ambiguous hero in the first Pirates film… into a whinny, evil, cowardly, incompetent, bumbling cartoon version of the character in the second one).

And besides that… Barbosa has been my single favorite character in the franchise anyway. Or how about a movie focusing on Barbosa and the Chow Yun Fat character? That would RULE! Man I hope Pirates 3 gets back to what made Pirates 1 so good.

  1. i dont know what i’d do without another pirates movie..I would like literally die….o and orlando bloom is sooo sexy its unbelievable!
    I LUV YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I am a huge Pirates Fan and have alot to say. Pirates without Johnny Dep would suck. Well maybe it would be ok, but you can’t take Johnny away. You would lose tons of spectators. I know that I would leave dissapointed without Johnny Keira or Orlando. They are the three main characters! I don’t think that the second movie was bad, I think that they were all equally good. I just can’t imagine Pirates Of The Carribbean without Captain Jack Sparrow. I was shocked and totally mad when I hear that Orlando and Keira might not come back, but take Johhny out? No way. You will lose tons of money, and everyone will be mad. I think it’s a great idea to make a 4th movie, the 3rd one left us in suspence. But you can’t take Jonny Keira or Orlando away.

  3. Now I liked Captain Barbosa, he was a true Pirate. I also like Captain Jack. I enjoyed all 3 and sure I will go see the 4th, because I like Pirate movies. I don’t know about not seeing Johnny Depp on screen , it depends how they make the Movie… Its all about the Writers and the Actors Fokes … And “Geoffrey Rush is a Great Actor”, He does hold his own!

  4. In time all good things must come to an end, However I am a crazy Pirates fan and can not bare to see it go! There is so much that was left unsaid in Pirates 3. I would like to see at least one more to show what happens to Will and Elizabeth (or Jack and Elizabeth for that matter) C’mon you know they are in love. I must state though that I dont think I will be wasting 20.00 dollars for a night at the movies to see any Pirates movie without Jack Sparrow!!!!!! P.S. The atlantis thing sounds pretty cool to me!

  5. “Pirates Triangle”

    Story Outline
Ships enter the triangle but don’t exit which is causing the Indian Trading Co to loose money they hire the best pirates from around the world Captain Jack and his brothers to solve the mystery of “The Pirates Triangle”. There are 3 points to my story this is only one for the rest you’ll have to wait.

  6. I have to disagree with the other commenters. Pirates is Johnny Depp. His quirkiness makes the movie at every turn. No matter what is done, it won’t be the same without him. I’m not saying a spin-off wouldn’t make money. People would go see it out of curiosity. I just think that most will leave the theater disappointed.

  7. Pirates 1 was a slow, plodding dog of a movie. I hated it. And to call Captain Sparoow “coplex and morally ambiguous” is like calling Judge Dredd “subtle and ethically complex.” The movie moved so damned slowly and was so incoherent I wondered if maybe the director was the one who was drunk and delirious, and not simply Sparrow. After the first hour and a half of tedium I zoned out and stopped caring what happened, since I’d long before stopped caring who it happened to.

Pirates 2 was a FAR better paced, better done flick than the first and I had the sense I knew the characters much better at the end of that one. Maybe because I wasn’t bored to death like I was in the first. There was little about the first Pirates dud to be liked, other than that it finally ended.

  8. You really need to proofread before hitting submit. You state “With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 rapidly approaching, people are already starting the speculations about Pirates of the Caribbean 4.”

  9. I understand what u’re saying John, and I think a movie about Cap’n Barbossa will be pretty damn entertaining too… for some of us. Will the rest of the world watch a pirate movie without an eye candy in the main role?

  10. I wouldn’t mind seeing a spin-off even if Jack Sparrow isn’t in it, it could still be a lot of fun.

It would work because even though Depp’s performance of Sparrow is what gets all the media attention, ALL the characters in these films are great. From Barbossa & Davey Jones to Pintel & Ragetti, they’re all fun to watch on screen.

Although Pirates 2 was a bit more ‘cartoony’ than Pirates 1 (not by much though), I enjoyed it just as much as the first one.
