Shaun Toub signs on for Iron Man

I have a feeling this time next year, every 5th post here will be about the upcoming IronMan movie. I am already getting the inkling of a major movie buzz from this project, and every bit of news gets me more excited.

Movie Web says:

Shaun Toub has been added to the cast of Marvel Studios and Paramount’s Iron Man, says Variety.

Jon Favreau is directing; it stars Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges.

Iron Man will start production in March.

Now I don’t even know who this guy is, but as soon as I pulled up his name on the net, I saw his picture and thought INSTANTLY that he MUST be the guy playing Mandarin. He even looks the part.

Granted, the article doesnt SAY he is playing Mandarin, and Toub isnt even the least bit Asian looking, but my first instinct was that he was playing Mandarin. I expect much of the Mandarin’s powers will be rewritten to overlook the inclusion of alien technology.

For those who don’t already know, the Mandarin is a remarkable genius with both earthly and extraterrestrial technology. The Mandarin is also an exceptional athlete, swordsman, and martial artist. He weilds a set of ten rings he wears (one on each finger) that each hold special powers from alien technology.

Or I could be really wrong and Toub will play Tony Stark’s UPS guy.

  1. Uh Jaysmack… This guy and Favreau haven’t worked on anything together in the past. Also if Favreau was casting his friends where is Vince Vaughn? And the rest of the cast of Swingers? he’s casting big names in big roles, and throwing in a guy who hasn’t played a major role in anything as the bad guy (theoretically Rodney did admit to a bit of forecasting). Let’s try some optimism at least until the trailer comes out.

  2. Sounds to me like Favreau’s doing a classic Hollywood power-trip, casting only actors he’s friends with instead of the best ones for the movie, kinda like how Jonathan Mostow cast Nick Stahl in Terminator 3. I hate it when director’s abuse their position. Hopefully the script is stronger (a LOT stronger!) than the (mis)cast.

  3. Damm what you guys think about robbie joining the cast thats awesome! He is a awesome actor. I feel a bit sceptict about him playing a comic bool charecter though.

O, by the way I’m new to this bloging and I love movies !

  4. Hmmm…….yes, it would make sense that the bad guy would be next to be cast. With a little bit of makeup, Toub could pass for Mandrin. Hey, they could do a Joel Grey type thing (when Grey played Chin in 1985’s ‘Remo Williams’) I suppose…

Taub also appeared in ‘Crash’- he was the storeowner whose store was vandalized.
This isn’t his first comics related role: also had a recurring role on “Lois & Clark” as ‘Asabi’.
