The story of Star Trek 11 seems to change almost daily, and most of the “news” we hear about the flick is most likely nothing by rabid fan inspired rumors that have nothing whatsoever behind them. But sometimes we hear some interesting stuff.
Take for example this bit of news that has come up regarding William Shatner and Leonard appearing in the new film… but NOT as Kirk and Spock. Our good friends over at MoviesOnline give us this:
“They seem to be going in the direction of putting in Nimoy and myself (Shatner). But in order to do that, it’s a difficult story to write. So they’re in the midst of wrestling with all of that. ”He also went on to say that he would not be doing a cameo. He wants a meaty role in order to sign on. The wierd part is he will not play Captain Kirk. So. Lets add this up. Captain Kirk wants to retun in Star Trek XI. Somebody else will play the role of Captain Kirk, and umm…. how will this work? Unless he plays an alien covered in make-up how do you give him a major role?
Yeah… that’s just strange. You either do the next film with Shatner and Nimoy in you lead roles… or you just frigging move on. I personally LOVE William Shatner… but if you’re going to take Star Trek in a new direction, then just take it in a new direction. Oh well… just my two cents worth.
I think the movie should start out with Shatner AS Kirk, but older. Maybe telling a story to a close friend from his younger years, or being in a bad situation which relates to the story of his younger self.
If not, screw the whole Shatner and Nimoy thing, If you are taking Trek in a new direction, use new blood all around; it is how it was successful the first time. Don’t try to rehash or make trekkies jump for joy because someone who is in the series originally shows up as an alien, take it serious. Star Wars prequels bombed because of Lucas- he is a moron who wanted to steer his own ship in his own direction, and it wrecked. Abrams is better, because he is going to take risks and is original himself.
Yeah, I think they really did miss out on the Earth-Romulan War, any how back to the movie. I’m not so sure of the idea of a prequel, and can’t see how it could be done with Shatner and Nimoy even as older versions of Kirk and Spock, and the roles are just too big and well established for anyone else to step into their shoes. You can’t capture the freshness and originality of the original series by imitating it, if your’e going in a new direction just go there.
While the idea of some kind of digital wizardry sounds interesting it would have to be pretty damn convincing to hold an audience for a couple of hours!
With all the new blood in the writing, directing and production team, surely they can come up with something original, captivating . Its Sci Fi, they’ve got a blank cavass, can go do what they want, even post TNG DS9 Voyager era.
That way they wouldn’t have to come up with clever ,or, not so clever plot devices ,trying to make square pegs fit into round holes!
Boy they really blew it by not getting into the Federation – Romulan war. Its a great untapped part of the lore..
I think that the 11th movie should start by telling how Trip survived the explosion and how with the help of section 31 he infiltrated the Romulan empire. This would lay the foundation for the movie’s central theme of the Earth-Romulan war at the time of Kirk’s academy days.
i agree the prequal for star wars failed miserablly, however, it will not fail for star treck if shatner and nemoy come back in it somehow…… remember the star wars prequals had no charachters we fell in love with in the originals……….. overall if it is done right it will be amazing …. but as spock once said the odds are 725.1 to 1 it will be done right
Personally, I think it is a mistake to do another freaking PreQuel. It failed with Star Wars and it will fail if you re-cast the original characters as well!
It was Shatner that made Kirk, and Nimoy “is Spock”.
I am a major Trekkie. I can tell you info from the books, movies, and shows – – and I gave up on Enterprise and have already decided that if a Prequel comes out – I’m not even going to see it when it is on DVD.

Have young kirk go thru a worm whole or something and meet older kirk and spoc. Or do something with a paralell universe, you could do any number of things
You people have NO vision. Do you not realize that Shatner and Nimoy could easily play Kirk and Spock while digital effects change their apparent age into whatever the script calls for? It’s already been done in a few scenes in X-Men 3, and it’s about time the trick is used for an entire film.
No Relatives or ancestors! Shatner and Nimoy as Krik and Spock.

He could play young Kirk’s father. That would seem the most likely route to me. You never know in scifi though, that’s why we love it so much!

I don’t think it’s such a bad idea to have Leonard and Shatner in some kind of roles…major roles I don’t know, but some kind of roles would be fun.
Look at BSG. Richard Hatch coming back as the Terrorist turned Politician has been a really interesting and enjoyable character. Seeing him with the new “Apollo” seems really cool too and just plain fun, not distracting at all.
So I do think it could work…how it’s done, now that’s another story.
Trek 11 better be good or any damage done if it really is a sucky-bad movie will take another 20 years to repair! The guys in suits better know what they are doing. If were them I would have laid low for another 5 years!
Or even another alternative universe…
Mirror Universe, perhaps?
Maybe he will play a much OLDER Kirk who comes back in time to tell YOUNG Kirk to change something he regretted back in the Academy.
Then we can see a Butterfly Effect and the entire Star Trek Universe is changed forever (therefore justifying a reboot of the series)
Someone has to pay me for that idea if they use it!
