Silent Hill 2 a go says Christophe Gans

silent hill.jpgChristophe Gains, director of the horror movie Silent Hill has confirmed that there will be a Silent Hill 2. Here is what moviesonline had to say about it (although they were also quoting a lot from silenthillforum.com):

When asked about the film and his goals with a second one he says: One of his goals for Silent Hill 2 is to correct mistakes he made with the 1st one which cost him a lot of energy. However, he wonders if he can truly come back for a 2nd movie because of Onimusha. He says that if he doesn’t come back, producers agree with him that the 2nd movie should keep the visual aspect of the 1st one. There is no way they are bringing a whole new vision of the town’s design. He doesn’t want a hollywoodian movie

Ok so…I for one do not want to see another Silent Hill with or without Christophe Gans. But if there has to be one I think I’d rather see a fresh director take this on since by his own admittance Gans did screw up the first film. But….who? Any ideas out there in the movie blog land for a new Silent Hill director?

  1. i am a very big fan of the silent hill games i think they are the best games ever and when they made a movie i swer my heart stoped because i was so happy i got to see it tree time in the movie house i think that it is the best movie ever they did more then good on it i love every one in that movie they coudn’t have picked better people to play the parts i can’t wait to see part two i hope they stick with the story of silent hill 2 when they make the movie i think its great. i love being a silent hill fan

  2. ONIMUSHA AND SILENT HILL MOVIE SEQUEL.

Christophe Gans is working on Silent Hill 2 and also working on Onimusha movie. On the IMDb website Onimusha has two French screenwriters Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud are writing the script for the movie, they must write the script to follow up to the first Onimusha game to put into the movie.
Gans is writing the script with Roger Avary on Silent Hill 2,
We will get some info soon.
    BRUCE ACOSTA
    AUSTRALIA.

  3. I for one, vote that we try to give this to somebody who won’t bother making it. What gets me is when people say “If you played the games you would undrestand better.”

What’s to understand better? That movie was so heavy on expository dialogue that you could teach classes in how not to write your plot. They literally say “Your reward is the truth…” and then tell you everything in a flashback montage. I like to think we’re a better movie-going audience than that, but I’m sure I’m wrong.

As long as they hire different writers, a sequel has a chance. But I probably won’t bother to see it, it was one of the few movies I went to see this year where I was tempted to ask the studio to refund my money because I spent the next two weeks grumbling about how they could have done it better.

  4. Brotherhood of the Wolf was one of the best movies ive ever seen! glad to see someone else liked it. the equal style and substance made the movie a classic in my eyes. gans didn’t do to bad, even though the ending didn’t make much sense to me and i played all the games.

is the Crying Freeman movie based on the manga, if so i must see it. silent hill 2 could be better with gans staying focused on the story and not trying to please fanboys….like me.
    peace….

  5. It’s funny.

When the first film was released, I thought, having NEVER PLAYED THE VIDEO GAME, that the film was effective in the creepy quality and FX department, even if Laurie Holden’s tight leather biker cop pants pushed credibility with me. Not that it was because she looked hot in them; but because she did.

Then I got…tired after defending the film and why I liked it. why? The damn fanbase, that’s damn why. The more they -and Gans’ own excuses of defense at the time- the less and less I liked the film. It’s like you see one film and you say it’s horrid, but sometime later, you look at it again and say it isn’t so bad after all…only in this case, it is the reverse.

    That damn fanbase.

In horror, you don’t NEED to explain “everything”. Some fears can be left open for interpetation, sometimes imagination. I felt the film was effective in that area; but everytime I heard “You must play the game to understand what’s going on” and/or “Well, if you played the game you’d love it even more”

In other words, I could not have liked it as much as I did, I would have liked t better…madness! Speaking of which, with all due respect to Gans, an American director has covered simular material in two films. His name is John Carpenter. The films are “The Thing” and “In The Mouth Of Madness”- the latter closer to Hill’s tone and concept.
It does not have to be a euro director. Am I saying they should approach Carpenter? No. But the wish of “the euro club” is closed minded in my view.

Gans has talent; I’m a huge fan of “Le Pact Des Loups” (Brotherhood Of The Wolf) and I heard many great things about “Crying Freeman”. But even the talented sometimes can get too full of themselves. On reflection, Gans errors was catering to the rabid fanbase.

And no, I never will play the game. Which brings up another subject- which is more fun? Playing a game and challenging you, or just watching it without any thought or participation?

  6. I loved the first Silent Hill movie, and as a huge fan of the game series I think it did a fine job representing the source material…It’s certainly the best VG to film adaptation so far. But it was not with out it’s flaws specifically in the dialogue/writing department which fell in the hands of Roger Avary. While I think he did a decent job I would like to see some one else write the 2nd script. As for directing I think Gans did a supurb job and I wouldn’t mind seeing him direct the sequel but I also wouldn’t mind seeing someone else (like David Slade as suggested above)…But for god’s sake not Eli Roth, that guy is way overrated.

    Viva Silent Hill! ^_^

  7. The first Silent Hill was one of the only decent video game adaptations I’ve ever seen. I liked it for what it was. I hope Gans returns because he saw the faults of the first and this time around he can fix that. If they do hire a new director let it be someone with who has been around for awhile. Maybe a somewhat well known director. If they hire a director who has never directed, then he might make more mistakes then Gans did.

  8. Well personaly I liked the first one allot. I thought it really lived up to the true spirit of the original game, which I love. Much more then just about all other video game based films so far. It for sure runs circles around the piece of crap Resident Evil movie series. WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT SERIES?! Doesn’t do the game series justice at all.

The only thing that really bothered me about Silent Hill was the very ending, unless your a hard core fan you wouldn’t get it and/or feel disappointed and it could of been a little scarrier and twisted/insane.

Other then that I love it. I don’t mind at all if Gains directs the 2nd one. I just hope it’s twice as insane and gory/creepy as the first one. But if he can’t, off the top of my head I think the guy who did The Descent or the guy who did Feast would be great.

  9. Okay just follow me here…..

    Joel Schumacher directs………..

that will kill the franchise right there until 10 years later Christopher Norton decides to direct a Silent Hill Begins and we are all satisfied.

  10. David Slade. He’s just finishing up 30 Days of Night. Would be perfect for the kind of art horror Silent Hill deserves.

I’m a huge Silent Hill fan because I think the universe it creates is extremely powerful, and creative people can do exciting work within its confines (outside of the games, the Steve Niles/Ben Templesmith comic miniseries for Silent Hill is awesome, and 30 Days of Night was a Steve Niles/Ben Templesmith collaboration too… David Slade connection.)

I’m incredibly excited to hear the sequel idea is even being tossed around, but I’d almost prefer to not have Gans onboard. Certainly not from a fanboy perspective, since I think he went out of his way to try not to stray from the game world, but because I think the performances he got from the actors was pretty poor, especially with the caliber of people he had. Silent Hill was huge on style but lacking terribly in the dialogue department. The lines felt like they were being read in translation (which i suppose made it feel more like the games.. regrettably..)

I guess my excitement depends mostly on what Gans sees as his mistakes and how he wants to correct them. I’d love to see more of a focus on energy and less on Gans’ dialogue, but thats when horror movies become action films like Resident Evil, and that’s not worth it.

    Regardless, Silent Hill 2! Yay!
