Early reviews for James Bond movie Casino Royale very strong

bond.jpgCasino Royale’s early reviews are very good, much to the credit it seems to the gamble that producers took on casting Daniel Craig. Yahoonews.com give us this:

British actor Daniel Craig, the controversial choice to play the new James Bond in the upcoming film “Casino Royale,” has won early reviews Miss Moneypenny would be proud of.

The producers of one of the world’s most successful movie franchises were seen taking a considerable risk with Craig, who angry fans said was too blond, too ugly and insufficiently suave to serve on Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Here are some of the early reviews:

“His main asset quickly becomes evident. He can act.” The Times Wendy Ide, “This Bond is far more vulnerable than his predecessors,” said David Edwards in British tabloid the Daily Mirror.

“Casino Royale” takes viewers back to the beginning of Bond’s life as a spy, allowing director Martin Campbell to introduce character changes most have welcomed. “This Bond is far more vulnerable than his predecessors,” said David Edwards in British tabloid the Daily Mirror.

“Casino Royale” is described as darker and more raw than previous films in the series and less reliant on the gadgets that have helped Bond out of countless scrapes.

I’ve wanted to see this movie since the first trailer I saw for it. I never thought that Craig was a bad idea, just the opposite, with his intense eyes and strong screen presence, he is a fantastic choice. The guy can really act, and act like a spy, his performance in Munich was my favorite of the film.

Now hearing these reviews I am even more excited. The storyline sounds great. I want to see a less in control Bond, see him grow into the smooth operator throughout the movie, not just be super cool from start to finish. A darker James Bond sounds great.

This film has the potential to be very lucrative and also it could bring the younger generation back to Bond. With better acting, action, and playing against the cliché lines this could be the best Bond film in a decade.

I’ve never gone to see Bond at a theater before but I will be stepping in line and I can’t wait to request Bond, James Bond.

  1. They could have done it WAY better!! You’re talking about BOND!! So this film ends with him trying to get the money she stole back!?

    WHAT?? WHAT!!??

Where’s the “DRAX,” that threat to humanity element?? That ‘Save the World From Tyranny’ ABSENT!! ABSENT!!!!

Even ‘terrorism’ could be scripted better that a 100 million “put” options!!

Didn’t quite answer my question i still had ‘Is the anything more to Ellipses?’

Has some disconnects that i’ve still yet to reconcile!

I’m guessing someone was asleep at the Quality wheel!

  2. Just saw the new Bond movie. It was fantastic. I have seen all but one of the previous ones and this one is the best. Craig reminds me of a Steve McQueen type of guy, looks that is, not handsome but sexy. And I love that all of those gadgets are gone and there is dialogue and realistic fighting without a bunch of one liners. It’s a must see.

  3. great acting, great spy movie. as a movie it gets an A.

It was NOT, however, James Bond. There was little of the sucessful elements in the typical James Bond movie. there was no Moneypenny, no gadgets, no pithy humerous one liners, no suave charm, not even the famous James Bond music during the action scenes. I understand the concept of Bond’s begining but I had no compassion for the charactor even when his heart was broken. It did not hold true to the past 4 decades of sucessful James Bond movies (there were a couple noteable exceptions).

As James Bond it gets an F

    What a disapointment.

  4. I went to the movie expecting to hate it because I thought Daniel Craig was–just not good looking–and he was blond.

I came out IMPRESSED by him–while I don’t think his face is to-die-for, he definitely has a body that could heat one up–and HE CAN ACT.

However, I was not impressed by the movie. James Bond without gadgets is just WRONG. Also, an introduction without silhouettes of shapely woment is not quite fitting. I kept looking for one or two in the admittedly interesting introduction of the chaning “card” graphics.

It was a good action movie–it just wasn’t a good “JAMES BOND 007” movie.

  5. Just seen Bond and its totally awesome. No CGI crap just superbly choreographed action and acting throughout. And to the Bond-boycotting Daniel Craig lynch mob you are a bunch of morons. Craig IS Bond without a shadow of a doubt. Beat the rest of the other Bond ponces hands down. He is a real person in this outing and Craig is a quality actor.

Really liked the way they have invigorated a tired and repetitive formula and played around with the Bond one-liner cliches with a great humourous touch.

I’ll be watching this one again soon!!!! Well done!!!!

  6. cant wait to see the new bond..ive read most of the reviews of craig and seen the trailer..finally i got to see the real bond after years…to those who still not convince about craig…sorry guys….the movie opens in days…

  7. For every man out there that thinks Craig is “too ugly” for the role, let me ask you one question –

Do you expect to have the desire to bite pillows for every one of your action movie heroes or is it just Bond that brings the sugar out in you?

    Fellas, fellas, fellas…
You know I’m just messin” with ya.

  8. For those who want to get aquainted with the new BOND, check out “Layer Cake”.

I’m telling you folks, this BOND’s for real!

For those who think he’s ugly…get a life!

  9. What, a Casino Royale without “Jimmy Bond” or David Niven? Blasphemy!

Having read Dr No in my mispent youth I was a little disappointed in the movie as it didn’t quite capture the character right. He wasn’t human enough physically and wasn’t cold enough personality wise.

I was hoping with a prequel we’d get rid of the Judi Dench incarnation of M. I don’t mind that M doesn’t like 007, I do mind when it’s used as a pathetic excuse for blatantly sexist comments. Tommorow Never Dies was bad enough without M and Moneypenny pissing acid over Bond’s broken heart.

  10. Wow Johnathan, what’s on your mind these days? I never mentioned drugs or rape. by being happy about Bond’s darker turn I just mean seeing a moodier, less perfectly suave all the time Bond will be more interesting to watch since it bodes well for the acting and a better storyline.

  11. Everything has to be “darker” for you, doesn’t it? Why not just make Bond a drug addict? That’s pretty dark.
NO. More human, less predictable, not godly: YES. Darker: NO, that’s not necessary. A good action spy movie can be exciting and fresh without being dark and full of drugs/alcohol/rape/etc.

  12. You are correct, madam.

but I do loves me some classic 80’s cinema.

Just please dont get me started on Beat Street or Howard the Duck, because then, little missy, you are in for a conversation.

(editor’s note: please dont be offended by “little missy” as the views expressed by the author do not neccessarily express the views of Jaybird Inc.)

  13. I’m counting down the days! I haven’t seen a Bond film in the theaters since Goldeneye and I wasn’t nearly as excited then as I am now. Daniel Craig looks to be fantastic and my hopes are high.

  14. Ahh…the day of release of Casino Royale is almost upon us.

Thanks to James Bond movies, when a number of us hear the word “Spy”, it automatically pictures a secret agent who’s got intelligence, looks, trained to combat, and of course the women. It’s about time an actor came by and gave us something a little different.

Just like the other Bond movies, I’m planning on going to see this one also in theaters, and watch Mr. Craig kick some royal ass. I hope to see more hand to hand combat.

I for one thought Brosnan was an awesome Bond, but his time to step down had come. I’d love to see the faces of CraigNotBond members as this movie makes a decent amount of money, just as the other Bond films.

  15. Casino Royale is an excellent film going back tot he DOCTOR NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE style. Daniel Craig plays Bond as a more harsh and cold character to suit today’s audience. They are great stunts with little to no cgi that you can see anyway.
I’m a cOnnery fan but to be honest I could not find anything wrong in Craig’s performance.
I think you will alll like it.
Oh and for those who read the book….yes…they put in the crucial scene with James tied to the bottomless chair and he does get the boys batted around really good. I was glad that scene was left in as it made the book for me. Craig pulls this scene off marvellously. THe guys will be tightening up their legs during that scene.
Lots of car chases and crashes but the super gadgets are not there which makes for a much more realistic spy movie.
    “The names Bond…James Bond.”

  16. I am looking forward to the film but i do agree with the above poster..he looks terribly out of place in a tux..and i don’t like him looking so obviously tough…but the film looks great so I will give it a chance…

on his majesty secret service will be tough to beat though..shame about lazenby being a terrible actor but that is by dar the best bond film to date…..

  17. I’ll pass.

Not going to see it because of Daniel Craig.

I would’ve love to have seen Pierce Brosnan doing another one. But if he had to go. Ok. But casting Craig is a turn off. He looks like a thug, nothing less. Plus the whole Americanizing of the charcter. Dude, you’re missing with tradition. I suppose they’re kicking that out to jump start the franchise. I’m not interested.

John you have said Brosnan portrayal of Bond was as if he could kiss your ass rather than kick it. … Yeah. That the friggin’ point. On the surface he looks like a gentleman. Push him or be his target. Kiss your ass goodbye. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. You want someone who can blend and infiltrate, not stand out. And he looks so out of place in a tux.

Personally I would’ve like to have see James Purefoy in the role. He fits the bill. Yeah, Ewan McGregor would’ve made a good 007. But I can understand him not wanting to be typecasted. Hmmm, Mark Lindsay Chapman if he was younger – perfect casting.

Hell, it would kick ass to have Jack Nicholson as a Bond villain. You know that would ROCK!

  18. C’mon Kristina,

You know you loved “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo”.
    Turbo as Boogaloo Shrimp.
    Ozone as Shabba Doo.
How can you not love it?

I said it from the beginning, Craig was a great choice and Casino Royale will rock.
    Man, I cant wait.

  19. this movie is like early christmas for me. Sadly i won’t see it until November 24 because my country is stupid. ut At least Sony will get one thing right this year.

  20. Just like Hugh Jackman, Michael Keaton, and Tobey MaGuire, Daniel Craig proves to all haters that you don’t need the damn look if you can act just like the character.

    Take notes, Bungie!

  21. This is a very welcome change for me. Goldeneye seemed to be the film that would revive the Bond franchise, but the next three films ultimately were flops. Die Another Day was even nearing on the verge of being quite laughable.

A darker, grittier Bond without all the smooth-talk and near-invincibility will be interesting to see. Especially in the very capable hands of Daniel Craig. He’s proven he can be a a vulnerable killer in the past (Munich), so I have only high hopes he’ll deliver in the film that will most likely jump start a new series of great Bond films.
