X-Men 3 Biggest October DVD Release Of All Time

It looks like more people liked X-Men 3 than you might think (I was one of them). As you know, X-Men 3 came out on DVD the other day, then reports are coming in that it’s opening day sales were good… damn good. Yahoo gives us this:

Industry sources peg combined consumer spending on the titles to be more than $80 million, making Tuesday the biggest fourth-quarter opening day in the history of home video. Industry sources put first-day sales of Fox’s “X-Men” at 2.6 million units and Disney’s “Mermaid” at 1.6 million units. Those figures include sales to rental dealers.

“X-Men” is the biggest October DVD debut ever, and “Mermaid” is the biggest animated DVD debut for October.

Not a bad day for the folks at Fox, which I’m sure will only solidify what Fox Chairman Tom Rothman already said the other day… there WILL be more X-Men films. This franchise is like printing your own free money. And even with some of the negative flack the film has taken since its release, it still sells 2.6 million copies on its first day. Wow. Oh yeah… I was one of the guys who bought it.

  1. I just finished watching the movie for the first time and I must say I was blown away. It was great to finally see the younger generation of X-Men use their powers. Dark Phoenix is such a bad-ass and she looked great doing it. It is sad to see the most powerful mutant to go but that just means Jean Grey will be back. If u know your comic books then u know what happens. I am a die hard fan of Jean Grey. X-Men 4 is going to bring Gambit for Rogue, so many others. This is the best X-Men.

  2. Naomi Campbell would be perfect if Storm’s mutant ability was hurling cell phones at personal assistants. HA!

    Just kidding.
But in all seriousness, I think Campbell would have been much better than Halle Berry.

  3. Bassett would be great choice if the series was continued. or in the far extreme Naomi Campbell. it’s not like Storm was given a lot of lines (in the first 2 anyway). Campbell looks the part (imagine her tresses dyed white) & could pull it off.

  4. “its all hateration from crackers drinking all that haterade”

That is by far the funniest, most ridiculous and most ignorant statement I have ever seen.

Who the hell is arguing that Storm is black?
Who the hell is arguing that Storm should be played by a black actress?

    Nobody.

Halle Berry was the worst part of this entire series. Her “diva” like behaviour only made it worse.
If Angela Bassett was 10 years younger she would have been perfect.
Angela Basset has more talent and presense in her little finger than Halle Berry has in her whole body.
And she is also a beautiful black woman that could have “represented” you with a lot more style, class, and talent than Halle ever did.

  5. some of you are seriously tripping!!! this was without a doubt the best x men of all three!!!!! this film had so much action it was ridiculous more than the first two put together!!! the sadest part was when jean killed the proffesor and the best for me was seeing bobby truly transform into iceman!!! i cant wait to see him ride his ice slide in part 4!!! any fan of the 80s cartoon spiderman and his amazing friends were very pleased with finally seeing him do his thing when fighting piro!!! halle berry is beautiful and they couldnt have a better storm my only problem with her is the producers hold back her powers!!!! she can make tornadoes and hurricans in the arcade game so let the diva do her thang in the movie!!!! i am ready to see dazler and gambit in part 4!!!! b patient x men fans there are alot of x men and the best is surely yet 2 come!!! superman returns didnt have shit on this movie and i am proud of this film!! i hope that charles x is resurected in the next as well as cyclops!! and im sure that the so called cure will wear off as evident at the end with magneto and his chess game giving us hope 4 rogue and mistics return be patient!!! you no that its time for the mighty sentinels 2 also come forth!!! the x men franchise is unstopable and amazing with almost no limitations!!! its thus far the best and my favorite!!!! you go halle and let the haters keep on hating its all hateration from crackers drinking all that haterade!!!! and storm has always been a black woman thats the only black x man!!! and the picked one of are most beautiful ladies to represent us!!!! the ACADEMY AWARD WINNING DIVA!!!!! SO STOP HATING!!!!!!

  6. I bought the X-Men Trilogy 3-pack today, just because I didn’t have either of the other two movies and they only like $27. Good deal for me.

As for X3, by itself it was medicore: The pacing was terrible, there were way too many irrelevant subplots, and the dialogue was bad. I’ve been forcing myself to read positive reviews of the thing for awhile today, just so I can stop feeling like I wasted one-third of that $27… Sigh.

Though, it has worked a bit. I learned to stop looking at the thing as a singular movie and view it as a “third act,” as a few of you have hinted upon already.

  7. So I just got done listen to the X3 audio commentary with Brett Ratner. When you listen to this man. Talk you can tell that he does not know anything about the X Men story line. I just think it is so sad that a major studio like Fox ok this man to make this film.

They do talk about ideas (Him and Simon Kinberg & Zak Penn )for X4 so it is not The Last Stand after all and the R2 DVD having a extra disc. I don’t care for this film but I know that the UK sometime has nicer special edition of us movies. Like I got my copy of The Deer Hunter DVD ( top 15 films of all times for me) like two years go.

If you live in the states I know that Memorex plays can be hack to play all region dvd here is the hack.

    – Power on the dvd-player.
- Press “Open/close”.(don’t close after!!)
- Press “1” “3” “6” “9” and the region of your choice “0” for free, “1” for Region1 etc…
Normally, nothing appear on screen or the player’s LCD screen, so don’t panic!
- Press “Power/standby” to validate region change.
- Power on the dvd-player and enjoy :)

My self as fan of UK TV shows I odder a lot of stuff form Amazon.co.uk and it works great.

Also John want do you thing of all this region stuff do you have a all region dvd player ? maybe you can talk about that on the next mail bag

  8. oops i know i wrote my sentence kinda wrong. i meant

it’s a fake dvd-type animated documentary about a George Lucas directed Lord Of the Rings. that’s better i think.

  9. i hope they’ll make 10-20 X-Men movies. in fact, make an X-Men trilogy of films. make each story a trilogy at a time, film them all at once like LOTR, and then release one each year. and after you finish filming and editing, then start another trilogy. that’s the best plan for the X-Men.

and hopefully this will spur other companies to make as many comic book movies as possible, and keep franchises alive into the tenth or more movie.

Because I do think there aren’t enough comic book movies out right now. I hope one day comic book movie will become it’s own genre. like your local blockbuster will have ‘comic book’ as one whole section.

  10. let’s face it kids,if you want someone to wreck a good trilogy: give ratner a call.
    hannibal lecter? check!
    x-men? check!
i’m waiting to hear the news that ratner has been hired to helm the follow up to nolan’s dark knight.

  11. I really liked this flick… sue me.

It was a decent ending to the story.
I basically looked at it like it was the 2 hour 3rd act to X2, which to me always seemed like it was missing an ending.
I do wish Bryan Singer had stayed on and made his version of it, but regardless, I still liked it.

The only part which I didnt like was Wolverine crying over Xavier’s “death”. No way in 40 hell’s would Wolverine cry about it. He would get mad as 40 hells, but he would never cry. The one bullshit move i felt that Ratner pulled.
Oh, and Halle Berry’s involvment. All of it. But that wasnt really Ratners fault. Singer cast the heffer.

  12. I didn’t buy it on DVD yet, but I will be in the nex month or so. I saw x3 twice in the movies and I did enjoy it, but not as good as x2, but better them X1 in my opinion.

  13. That’s just sad. Do people not know they’re getting hosed by the studio? Ratner has already stated there will be a better special edition of the DVD, and other regions already have the 2 disc set. This barebones DVD release in North America is nothing but a cash grab from the studio. You’d think at this point, people would just assume the studio is going to fleece them with triple dipping on the DVD and bypass the initial release. Apparently, that’s not the case.

I did enjoy the movie for what it was – not as good as the first two, but a decent comic book action film. I’ll probably get the 2 disc special edition when it comes out…

  14. Well, thats suprising! I was debating about getting it just so i can have all three of the films. But then i just kept thinking how dissapointed i was with the film and how it really wasnt as good as the first two. i may get it, but im not sure. i dont even know if i want to sit through it agian, HA!

  15. Yiiikkeeessssssss!!! Oh well looks like Ratner’s career will continue unabated…too bad because as far as talent goes, he is in definite short supply.

  16. ratner’s commentary sux just like his directorial ‘skills’ do. i suspect the reason for the huge sales are
a)the people who actually liked it
b)the people who stayed away from it at the cinema due to bad word-of-mouth from their friends and said “i’ll just wait until the dvd comes out”
    c)anally retentive completists
d)idiots who wanna give this cinematic pile of dung a 2nd chance.

  18. Meh… still doesnt compare to the first two. Only good parts are the action, and some of it is pointless. I dont know, it was ok. But thats cool about dvd sales.

  19. Wait a minute… Didn’t your dvd have Ratner’s commentary with the writers John?

This movie X-Men 3 is exactly like a comic book. It feels like a comic book that is filmed. If I had read this story in a comic book it would be one of the best I had ever read… As a movie, it lacks certain things to be truly great, but it still has enough good stuff to make me enjoy it immensely.

  20. Hey Louis,

Yeah, I was really public about my despair over X-3. Storm was still bad, not having nightcrawler was bad… and multiple man was pointless. But, as I said in my review… the movie surprised me and I enjoyed it.

At least you know I don’t pre-decide if I like a movie or not before seeing it. :P

    Cheers!

    ~John

  21. Wow I am not a fan of X3
Because it kill the story line of the Dark Phoenix form the comic book for me. There was a way to much Halle Berry in that film for me. Over this is NOT the best X-Men film. But I did buy my copy of it and I had seen it in the theaters .I was also sure this was not the last X Men film.be sure to watch to the very end of the credits because you will see Charles Xavier in the film one more time. To set up the story line for X4

What my friend told me is that a lot of people where buying the box set of all 3 films. When she got her copy. I am in stock that it is selling more copies then the little Mermaid (got that one also)

  22. Hey John,

I happened to stumble upon your Audio Edition number 44, and you were trashing this movie pretty bad (because they were adding multiple man and other announcements). It’s funny to listen to now and no worries, I also believed it would bomb back then.

  23. Got it delivered to my door today and watched it again. Worth the cash, except the Extra’s fucking suck. 1(!) commentary by Avi Arad, Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter? I don’t get the Brett Ratner commentary! Horrendous.
