Second Last Nail In The Coffin For Indiana Jones 4

About 5 months ago I put up a post where I declared there wasn’t going to be an Indiana Jones 4. They keep talking about it and talking about it… even to this day… but trust me folks… this thing ain’t ever going to happen. And today I read a couple of more nails in the coffin of this puppy. George Lucas was talking to Variety Magazine and said basically the following 2 things:

ABOUT LUCASFILM: “We don’t want to make movies. We’re about to get into television. As far as Lucasfilm is concerned, we’ve moved away from the feature film thing, because it’s too expensive and it’s too risky. I think the secret to the future is quantity. Because that’s where it’s going to end up.”

ABOUT INDIANA JONES: “Steve (Spielberg) and I are still working away, trying to come up with something we’re happy with. Hopefully in a short time we will come to an agreement. Or something,”

Boy, that sure is a far cry from the “We’re done!” and “We’ll start filming soon” garbage we’ve been hearing isn’t it? Lucas film is moving into TV, Spielberg and Lucas can’t even agree on a script let alone anything else, Spielberg keeps filling up his schedule and Lucas has those new Star Wars TV shows he’s developing… and Harrison Ford is 64 years old… 5 years OLDER than Sean Connery was then they Made Indiana Jones 3. Is it becoming clear?

No one wanted to see another Indiana Jones film more than me… but take the stocking down, there is no Santa Clause… and there won’t be an Indiana Jones 4. The only thing left now is for them to officially say it out loud… and that won’t be long now.

  1. Sorry but Tim Allen is doing another one of his Santa Clau$: the Search for More Money. Anyway Indiana Jones has gone the way of the dodo, and it has to do with money: Luca$ and $teven no longer will do it for the money, they don’t need it so why bother. I would like it very much but i fear a flop. I much rather see Ford and Lucas tackle another Star Wars where he could play an old Han Solo with Jedi children. Call Carrie Fisher she’ll do it, and throw in a gay Luke Skywalker for keeping with the times and you got yourself a hit: Star Wars: Return of the Jedikes. Unfortunately, I’ve heard Steven is not happy with George’s idea to make Indy 4 entirely with blue screen, and save a lot of money by creating a digital Mr. Jones.

  2. Spielberg should quit this project fast and get started on his Lincoln biopic with Liam Neeson; I want to see a damn good film from the Civil War. Last time we had one was Gone With the Wind. Spielberg should get his mind in “Schindler’s List” mode and get this film made!

  3. It sounds like the longer they’re ‘in talks’ the less and less enthusiastic they are about making this. Both Spielberg and Lucas need to stop blowing smoke up our collective asses and just come out and say what we already know: there is not going to be and Indy 4. How hard could that possibly be?

  4. Too bad! I was looking forward to this final send off even with Harrison close to 70!

But how about continuing the franchise with another actor, younger but in the same vain as Ford!? I love Ford as Indy and always will, but characters easily changing actors nowadays, I could live with another casting as long it is on the money.

Howabout Clive Owen!? I think he is awesome and even though Daniel Craig is Bond, I would have love to have seen him as Bond! He wouls have a been a great Bond!

  5. Campea was right about something he said a while back: Lucas is a great storyteller.
i just think he needs filters & to surround himself with. great filmakers who’ll say “George that idea for this bit of the movie sux balls”. dude has got too many yesmen around his imperial ass nowadays. i belive that he has forgotten that the very first star wars film was a TEAM EFFORT.
one more thing on his tampering: i think whether it is consciously of subconsciously,he wanted to direct a film on the level of Empire Strikes Back with the prequels. hence his choosing to direct all 3 of them instead of just doing phantom menace as he originally stated.
except he cannot substitute Irvin’s character development & his rapport with actors with all the CGI in the galaxy.

  6. i really don’t like george lucas at all. his TV shows will suck and that’s about that. he just got lucky on the star was franchise. i don’t think he has another good idea in his head.

  7. little georgie lucas still bullshitting away just like his spiel on how he had it all planned out about the prequels. instead it became a case of tampering with the original trilogy so they better match his fuck-ups with the prequels. i guarantee he’ll tamper with the Indy series too eventually.
question for you guys here at the MovieBlog:
sure he owns the franchise, but should he even be tampering with another director’s films? he did not direct Empire or Jedi..

  8. Given Lucas and Spielberg’s recent track record, they couldn’t have helped but bloch it, and that’s not even mentioning the inherent awkwardness of returning to the franchise so many years later. I’d be interested in seeing a new creative team tackle a prequel / reboot, though.

  9. Yeah, I think that ship has sailed. Even if they started filming tomorrow, Ford would be darned near 70 by the time the movie came out. Maybe a continuation of Young Indiana jones with a younger actor? That might be cool…

But Ford is and always will be Indy to me, so I don’t know if anyone could carry another feature film.

    Sad.

This one has lingered in development hell near as long as Spider-Man, hasn’t it?

  10. I dont even want there to be an Indiana Jones 4.
Nothing would ever live up to the first three and there is no way they can meet our expectations for this movie. It will be a disaster if it does happen, but thankfully I think you are right John.
It probably will not and definitely should not be made.
