Russell Crowe will star in remake of western flick 3:10 to Uma

russell.jpg In a sea of animation, digital gore and think films a western starring Russell Crowe, Gretchen Mol and Peter Fonda; may be just the right dig for box office gold. And a great pick me up for Crowe’s career. The people over at movieweb.com give us this:

Peter Fonda, Gretchen Mol, and Dallas Roberts have signed on to the remake western, 3:10 to Yuma for Lionsgate. They’re joining Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in the film, being directed by James Mangold. Variety says the film revolves around a desperado who is caught by a sheriff determined to bring the outlaw in. Sheriff’s plans go awry when the desperado’s accomplices stage an ambush.

Moody jerk or not I am a fan of Russell Crowe and this is a very good movie to be attach to. He’s kept a pretty low profile for a while now, he wasn’t in any movies in 2004, Cinderella Man was all he did in 2005 and A Good Year is the only thing scheduled to come out in 2006. It was smart of him to quiet it down a bit since his lippy comments and brash behavior turned most casting directors and audiences off.

Taking on this role now is another good choice. Crowe was first noticed by North American audiences in the western The Quick and the Dead (he was noticed in Romper Stomper by movie coinsures before that but not the general public). For him to pick a western with a lot of good actors working along side of him as his renewal role is wise.

I’m ready to take a look at him again, haven’t heard much of him in the news in quite a while and he is an academy award winning actor after all.

What does everyone out there think? Has Russell Crowe given you enough time to lose that bad taste in your mouth from his naughty behavior? Or should he stay in Australia and make more babies?

  1. LIving just an hour or so from Russell and Danielle in Australia, it is quite easy to understand his temperament! I saw him on Parkinson one night talking about women in Australia, you would have thought he was Steve Irwin talking about red belly black snakes! (Only joking… but I am English!!!) Give him a break and give him credit for his remarkable acting ability. Haven’t we all had anger or other disfunctional baggage from childhood or whenever? His relationship with Danielle has been healing for him but also time consuming… He will be one of the world’s best actors make no mistake… Most of the world’s genius role models have had challenges of some sort or another. He has the most incredible talent but needs to self-actualize and mature. In 2020, he will upstage the likes of Sean Connery. So there is the half pissed psychological profile of Russ

  2. Seconding Jay and OiVei, there was never a “bad taste” for me. As Liz pointed out, he’s practically a choir boy compared to the Hollywood standard. He’s gotten drunk and stupid in public a couple of times and thrown a phone when he lost his temper with an insolent desk guy at a very expensive hotel. Misdemeanor and court costs of $160. I think he will be regarded as the most talented actor of his generation. And I would pay money to see him read a phone book. I’m usually not a fan of remakes, much less remakes of classics. But I respect his judgment and if he thinks this will work, I will be there. Next suggestion, remake Beckett.

  3. Russell Crowe is one of the greatest actors in the biz ! The only reason he doesn’t seem to be well liked is due to the fact that he is one of the few actors who is honest, and true to himself! Russell is not for sale, at any price, for any reason! I say, ” Good on ya, mate!” He’s NEVER left a bad taste in my mouth either! I’m PROUD to be counted as one of his loyal, and true fans!

  4. Christian Bale as the sherriff. Russel Crowe as the desperado.
And Gretchen (Bettie Page) Mol as the damsel.

    I’m there.

Russel Crowe is a fantastic actor. Sheer talent.

Like OIVEI said, I never had a bad taste to get rid of.

  5. Just a note, Cinderella Man was made in 2004, and was released in 2005. His next film, A Good Year, directed by Ridley Scott, was made in 2005 and will be released Oct/Nov, depending on where you are.

He has participated in two films already this year, Tenderness (directed by Jon Polson, who acted with him in the Aussie movie, The Sum of Us), and just wrapped his part on American Gangster, directed by Ridley Scott, their third collaboration. The movie also stars Denzel Washington. At the end of October, Rusell will begin filming 3:10 to Yuma.

He was one of the first to sign on to this film in this latest incarnation. Everyone else, to the best of my knowledge, signed on after. I think it’s probably a smart move on all their parts to join in.

And, I have to agree, there are far more celebrities who do far worse things, but yet Russell Crowe is faulted the most. Why? Because he speaks his mind. God bless him.

I never had a bad taste in my mouth.

Agreed. He “is” one of the best thespians out there.

  6. “Has Russell Crowe given you enough time to lose that bad taste in your mouth from his naughty behavior?”

Crowe has done far less than many other Hollywood stars who get away with murder.Brad Pitt’s and Kate Hudson’s adultery, anyone ? Crowe threw a phone, the judge reviewed the video and reduced the charge. Case over.
Crowe is absolutely honest, tells it like it is and doesn’t tolerate idiots well.Good for him.
As for “turning casting directors off”, he’s making three movies this year. The film industry needs his talent.

  7. Mangold is the guy who made Cop Land (which I liked a lot), and I presume he will be able to develop the story and characters.

As for Mr. Crowe, I think its time for him to come out and show the movie-lovers that he is one of the best thespians out there.

And I agree with Jason: its good to have another Christian Bale movie. Very talanted actor.

So we have talanted director, talanted cast and presumably original western story, with nice action and believable characters.

    I’ll definetly see it.
