Matthew Broderick in Wonderful World

I have always loved Matthew Broderick’s movies. Ever since classics like Ferris Beuller’s Day Off and the poorly scored LadyHawke, I have always loved the charm and wit of this guy. But he hasnt been in anything really stellar lately. Well if this premise has much to do with the film, I dont know if he is going to break that streak.

Cinema Blend says:

So Matthew Broderick is about to play a cynical divorcee who dates a black woman, in the new character drama Wonderful World. African American actress Sophie Okonedo will play his interracial love interest in the film Production Weekly says is being written and directed by Darkman screenwriter Joshua Goldin.

It appears that they are bringing a fair bit of focus to the idea that she is black. Like that matters anymore? Back when it might have been culturally relevant, this might have sent shockwaves in the tabloids. Anyone remember the commotion stirred by Jungle Fever?

I see this being a movie that focuses on how different these two are. Maybe shes hardcore rapper type dating a straight no-rythm white guy. Oh wait, they already did that with Queen Latifa in Bringing Down the House. Or maybe they will stage it as “edgy” like when Jack Tripper had to pretend he was gay so he could share an apartment with two girls. Maybe they will start dating, but she will conveniently forget to mention to her father that her boyfriend is white. Like anyone cares!

Perhaps now that its acceptable to date “outside your colour” and movies like Brokeback Mountain are greeted with acclaim, its time to turn the tables and make our differences an issue again.

Next thing you know, there will be entire TV networks designated to entertain certain cultural groups, and fading reality shows will start to group people off by race in competitions with one another to get attention.

I can hear Louis Armstrong singing the Title track now.

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin’ hands, sayin’ “How do you do?”
They’re really saying “I love you”

  1. I think it will be an interesting movie. I like Matthew Brodrick. I loved in Boluxi Blues. He played the stereo typical mainstream libral Brooklyn Jewish good guy perfectly. As Corey Parker played the stereotypical middle of road yet unbending Jewish guy perfectly. The contrasting approaches to addressing the military culture while sharing the same strong integrity was supurb.

When culturally different people date, their are differences that each person must deal with. When culturally and racially diffferent people date or marry, they deal with the intruding values of the outside world. It can become a testiment of integrity, shear will and loyalty to the person that one loves. It’s the experiences of dealing with the struggles of making a relationship work when their are internal and extermal factors causing the struggle that makes for an interesting movie or novel. Particularly when each party is not aware of their own prejudices, and may be insensative or slow to understand the emotional impact of racially offensive actions. Living those stories are hard. Watching the stories in screan can be heart wrenching. We all believe in hope. We all want to see to people who fall in love under difficult situations make it. It is the epic journey of love. It is hard enough when two people have a full understanding of each other and share the same religion and cultural backround to make it work. But to add the eliment of a jaded divorce’ falling for someone of different ethnic backround will be a great movie if it done correctly. If it done in a way tht the audience has fallen in love with the characters and is rooting for them to make it.

Matthew Brodrick is not someone who I would think would date person of color. I was quite supprised that he was able to marry Sarah Jessica Parker considering she seems to be one who has style and he seems more conservative. I seems like a Boston type versus a New York type. I suspect he will be believable as the jaded Divorce’. Sophia is so attractive it is believavle that he would fall for her. If their is no magnatism between them it won’t work. However, if their is, the movie will be very interesting. I remember going to see “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and feeling the sexual tension ooz off the screan. I felt the sameway in the movie “Some Kind of Wonderful” with Eric Stoltz and Mary Sturant Masterson, and also Mrs Soefel with Mel Gipson and also “Something New” with Simon Baker and Sanna Latham. They don’t make to many movies like that where the audience is literally rooting for them to make it because you feel the love oozing from the screan. We shall see. I know that I’ll go and see the movie.

  2. Im not Campea. Im Rodney. The other guy who writes here. Just sayin.

But yes, I have seen War Games and that too is an instant classic. Especially watching him with his high tech computer system (which by today’s standards looks pretty pathetic)

He has repeatedly impressed me in a number of films he has done, but lately he seems to have lost it. I dont know.

  3. I think Matthew Broderick should look for a script that re-visits his Ferris Bueller character as an adult. While he has earned the stage acclaim, his movies are far below his potential. Heck, even ‘Wargames’ was good. Since his adult movies have been lacking, he really needs a good vehicle to put his movie career back on track.
The premise of this new movie doesn’t sound soundlikeit’s breaking any new ground, hell, it barely sounds interesting.

  4. The only thing wrong with that Darren would be that its not overly interesting. Thats all. Its been done more times than Star Wars re-releases.

My favourite movie of that format would be French Stewart in Love Stinks with the tasty Bridgette Wilson. But then it doesnt really work out for him. That makes it funnier.

  5. Sophie Okenedo does hail from Britan. She is racially mixed. You are right, Johnson.
Now, who is she playing in this film again?

I see Rodney’s point, although despite the recent lukewarm receptions of the remake of “Look Who’s Coming To Dinner” and the film “Something New”, will this film really fly?
Yes, sadly, in this day and age, there may be some people who don’t want color blindness. This goes on both sides.

Let’s backtrack here. How about a guy who gets through a nasty divorce, becomes cynical about love and relationships, finds love again and rebounds? Take out the race card, and that’s pretty much the story, right? Something wrong with that?

  6. See, I didnt find that very funny. The neurotic cartoon voice of Broderick drove me crazy. The dialogue makes it clear that this was meant for stage, but the antics just didnt make me laugh at all.
