Cannes hates Southland Tales

The much hyped new film from Donnie Darko creator Richard Kelly, Southland Tales, did not get a very good response, to say the least.

Empire online was at the screening in Cannes:

“Indeed, the critical reaction has almost unanimously been negative, with some seasoned Cannes-goers insisting it’s actually the worst movie they’ve ever seen in competition here. During the screening, the walkouts started at around 20 minutes in, and there was a slow haemorrhage of audience members throughout.”

That’s gotta hurt. I had high hopes for this one, but it seems that it’s not easy making a follow up to a modern cult classic.

Southland Tales stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar (she’ll always be Buffy to me, damn it!) and Sean William Scott.

  1. Donnie Darko is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I’m keeping faith in Kelly. I really really hope this is a great movie. On my website I have all the movies I’m looking forward to see this year. And so far Scary movie 4 has dissapointed me and well no one has really said anything good about The Da Vinci Code which was on my list but I dout I’ll head to the movies to see it. X3 is on my list aswell and I’m going to be watching it on Thursday so fingers crossed that X3 will be be as good and X2.

  2. Cannes can hate Southland Tales all they want. I’m sure it’s not as bad as people are saying. I’m still looking forward to this flick.
