Xena The Movie?

Xena.jpgLooks like Lucy Lawless and Xena: Warrior Princess creator and Producer Rob Tapert (the two are actually married in real life) are very keen and serious about bringing the Warrior Princess to the big screen. I mean after all… what else does she have to do these day?

The only problem is that there seems to be some dispute as to who owns the rights to Xena. The good folks over at Moviehole give us the following:

“I think a movie would be great, and I’d love to do it,” Lawless said in an interview at SciFi Wire. “I’ve been wanting to do it for years.” But, she added: “Nobody can agree who owns the rights, and it’s a big fat pain in the ass.”

Lawless says if the movie happens – she’d love it to be comical. “I know Rob can tell a great story and could come up with a really creative new spin on it, much like David Eick and Ron Moore did with Battlestar Galactica, and make it relevant to today’s audience,” said Lawless. “But I think it could be a good comedy, because comedy always works.”

Comical??? Ok yes… the original Xena TV show did have some laughs in it… but it was still primarily a fantasy adventure show. The whole reason the new Battlestar Galactica works so damn well is that it is NOT comical. I’m not saying that they should do a Xena film… but if they did they would be wise to stick with the genre and fantasy adventure and tone down the slapstick comedy if they hope to connect with an audience at all. 1. I LOVED THE XENA SERIES. IT WAS THE BEST BESIDES HERCULES. BUT I CAN REMEMBER SEEING LUCY LAWLESS IN THE HERCULES SERIES FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME AND I JUST ATE IT UP I LOVED EVERY LAST MOMENT OF THAT VERY EPSIODE.

I AM A VERY HUGE HERCULES AND XENA FAN. YES, I MISS THOSE SHOWS EVERY SINGLE DAY OF MY LIFE BECAUSE I WOULD WATCH THOSE SHOWS FAITHFULLY EVERY SATURDAY AND THEN WHEN THEY WOULD HAVE SPECIAL EPSIODES FROM TIME TO TIME AND NOW I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE A XENA MOVIE AND HAVE ALL THE CHARCTERS FROM HERCULES IN THE MOVIE AND IT WILL BE A SMASH.

  2. Please Please Please make a Xena movie or my friend will have a fit!!!To stop this terrible event from occuring, the only thing that can be done now is to make a Xena movie.

  3. My brother bought all the DVDs of Xena and I frequently watch them. Whenever I feel bad or depressed about school then I just randomly pick an episode and watch it. It cheers me up completely. My favorite episode is ‘A Neccersary Evil’ with Valaska becoming a god and I was waiting for her to jump back out of the lava like Calisto and begin the hunt for Gabrielle again, except this time Gabrielle can give her a few whacks with her daggers. Of course she’s not my favorite character… Calisto is and also Joxer so I’m hoping that Joxer some how comes back in the Movie like Xena normally does after dying and maybe somehow Eve turns back into Calisto and she’s evil again.

I miss the the feeling of watching a new episode and wish that maybe there’s a seventh series where Gabrielle somehow finds a way to bring back Xena and Joxer and they continue there journey as the three saviors of Greece or something. Also, If you are going to make a new series ever then a good episode would be to make Dayhawk arise into the world as an actual monster god and throw down meteors or something. I have so many idea’s I could think of for a new series so I reckon’ you could think of some idea’s too to make a new series.

This movie thing sounds awesome too, since there are like six or seven Hercules movies and zero Xena movies but a new series would still beat it.

  4. I have every episode on tape, bought them on DVD, and pretty much grew up with the show. I love it. Whenever I see a new movie, I can play, “spot the Xena actors” and I get cut cause I want the gang back together. Make a Xena movie. PLEASE. Also put some of the Hercules characters and Joxer into it. Don’t forget Minya. Bring it back. Please

  5. there’s no way that they can bring xena back. the movie can’t be set post season 6. it all comes down to the faction that wanted the show back versus the faction who felt that the series finale, while tragic, fit the growth and logic of the characters. as another person said, a complete comedy would be painful, but if they manage to bring the same combination of camp and seriousness i think that the fans will make it worth their while. universal needs to learn a lesson from firefly and stop fighting the bad fight.

  6. If a movie is done, it should be serious with a little humor it it….but a complete comedy is a mistake. If they go the comedy route, then the film will be a flop and there’s no point in doing a movie.

The series ended with Xena’s death, so they somehow need to bring her back…..and a comedy doesnt work with how they ended the show…..A serious action packed film is the best answer to make the movie a “hit” with the audiences..

  7. Yeah, Xena was very campy. That’s why I was watching it. The plots were very poor, but it was fun. Galactica works so damn well because it has good scripts, not because it’s serious. And I wouldn’t mind seing a serious Xena movie, if it had a good story. But I doubt they will manage to do that, so maybe it’s better if they aim for a comical movie instead.

  8. As far as I know the entire Xena series was known and well-liked for it’s campy factor. Simply because Battlestar works because it’s serious doesn’t mean Xena has to follow the same path, unless there’s some overriding, overwhelming similarity they share that I’m not aware of…?
