The huge European company Tesco is planning a movie download service. For those of you who don’t know, Tesco started as a UK grocery store, and they’ve grown and grown into DVD selling and rental, raft of financial services, electrical goods, even music downloads. I am seriously not plugging them, just trying to get across how much they’ve diversified.
So now they’re looking to move into film downloads. The BBC have the news that they’re looking into the service, but that they don’t think the UK Broadband infrastructure is ready for it.
Tesco commands a 10% share of internet music sales, and is targeting film as the next place for digital expansion.
Wippit announced plans last month to launch the UK’s first site offering films to download and keep.
…A possible launch into online film downloads comes after Sony announced it would make 500 films available by next year in a bid to combat online piracy.
I think this is about time, for a lot of people they’ll love this service and start downloading like mad. For me, I will probably use it for movies that don’t heavily rely on visuals or digital soundtracks, and for checking out a movie I might like to buy
I think I’d only use this service to see movies that I just can’t get any other way, such as foreign films etc. that don’t make it over here for months. If they don’t take it in that direction, I can’t see myself using it when I can walk down the street and rent DVDs.
