Bewitched Trailer

Bewitched_poster.jpgI’ve gotta tell you I’ve really been looking forward to the Bewitched trailer. I love Nicole Kidman and I love Will Ferrell… so it’s gotta be great right? Well… maybe not.

The good folks over at Moviefone have posted up the brand spanking new trailer for the film… and… well… disapointed. Here’s a little excerpt from the synopsis of the movie. It’s not quite the Bewitched you may remember:

When a movie star (Will Ferrell) decides to remake the hit ’60s sitcom ‘Bewitched,’ he discovers that his leading lady (Nicole Kidman) is a real witch — literally.

One of the many facts of life is that a good trailer does not necessarily mean a good movie… nor does a bad trailer mean a bad movie. I have hope that Ferrell will pull this one out. Bottom line, I don’t like the trailer. Didn’t even make me giggle.

So go watch the trailer, and then come back here and tell us what you thought of it.

  1. ‘Not too impressed with the trailer, tho I did laugh at a couple of lines. Did Nora Ephron direct this movie? If yes, not a good sign. I like her as a writer, but as a director – not so much. Too schmaltzy. But, like Sabrina above, I will give this flick a chance solely because of Kidman. I love her work (she was fabulous in “To Die For”, if we’re to assess her comic abilities). And as a big fan of the original Bewitched series, I actually welcome the movie’s “twist” to make it more contemporary.

  2. I thought the trailer looked incredibly stupid. I don’t like Will Ferrel, but I do like Nicole Kidman. I think I’ll wait until this one comes out on DVD.

  3. I have always followed the Cruise-Kidman relationship since “Days of Thunder”. I was one of those devastated that they got divorced, and IMO the divorce did more harm to Cruise than it did to Nicole. Hollywood has since showed sympathy to her and it was a contributing factor when she won Best Actress for “The Hours”. Add to the fact that she is also a brilliant actress.

I like both of them as actors but I feel that Tom should also have his share of accolades for his performances in “The Last Samurai” and “Collateral”.

  4. Joh, she was a huge deal back in Austrailia even long before she hit the US and Days of Thunder. Every Aussie I know has told me the very same thing. And if that weren’t enough, she knocked my socks off with her early Hollywood flicks that didn’t have a thing to do with Tommy Boy. (Don’t get me started on his grossness factor. Yuck!) I love her work. When she was in Far & Away, I knew she would win an Oscar some day; it was only a matter of time.

  5. Hey Jason

Yeah… I’d have to disagree with you. Kidman was aleady a big deal on the rise when she was still with Tom… she’s just continued along that path of getting bigger and bigger since the split.

  6. Everyone didnt make a big deal over her until they got divorced….and I’ll tell you how I know this. I am not a fan of hers….all I know about her was that she was in Days Of Thunder and the other Tom Cruise movie. But after they broke up…..she was in the news more than Tom…she started doing more movies with top billing, big movies,ect…..everyone was speculating who she ws dating.ect….am I wrong?

  7. I also am a fan of Miss Kidman, so I will definitely see this one. I also cant wait for “The Interpreter” opposite Sean Penn.

Donna, youre talking about “Practical Magic” with Sandra Bullock I believe, I liked that one myself.

  8. I have seen Will Ferrel’s recent movies, and I am not too impressed. His humor isn’t the same as mine. I will give Bewitched a chance because of, and only because of, Nicole Kidman, and not because Tom left her, but because I think she has a lot of class and she’s a versitile actress. I respect those things. She can pull it off… not so sure about Will.

  9. I dont get it…..what is the atraction to Will Ferrell? Did he get all the roles that were left vacant when Chris Farley died? Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy just didnt do it for me….the guy from the office tv show is a better actor and has a better comic sense than Will…..as far a kidman…..when will this Love Fest for her end….Tom left her….get over it. As far as the Trailer for Bewitched….ehhh….special effects…..bad acting….ect….I’ll rent it

  10. It seems to me that Kidman played a witch some years back. She did better in that one.
They blew Stafford Wives and now their going to blew this one. Not even interested in seeing another remake.
    Donna A.

  11. My first thought was that Will wasn’t going for the laughs or the gut busting gags for a change. That alone will make me give this one a second thought. And I was surprised – in a nice way – to realise it was a much better updated version with a spin on it like this one has. I think this could work. It’s not going to leave us longing for a frat bash, that’s for sure, but maybe – just maybe – we will actually enjoy a nice 90 minutes watching Nicole holding her own against Will and the witch getting some much needed revenge on the cliche predatory male star who’s only out for only himself. It could work.

  12. Watching the trailer I think I will place it in the stupid, but could be funny movie catagory.

It’s definitely not what I was expecting, and frankly, I’m tired of all the old tv shows being converted to movies. Not to mention the movie remakes period.

If anyone can pull this off Will Ferrell can – here’s to hoping.

  13. I posted about this at Screen Rant today as well. I’ll just be lazy and repost it here. :-)

According to this trailer you can add Bewitched to the list of mutant movie remake offspring.

If you were hoping for a revisiting of the premise of the original show: Forget it. Instead of a bumbling husband with a loving wife who happens to be a witch, you have a bumbling actor signed to be in a TV remake of the original series with an apparently spoiled co-star (Nicole Kidman).

Now I love watching both these actors on screen, and I’m sure that Will Ferrell will manage to make this funny, but I am again amazed at:

    A. The continual need of Hollywood to tap 60’s TV shows and movies for material.

    B. If they’re going to do that, why make such radical changes to the original concept? Do they think that this way they can borrow an idea but still get points for originality?

Another thing that annoys me is when a movie is blatantly “self-aware”, as in this case with the acknowledgement of the original as a TV series within the film. It takes a deft directorial hand to pull off a wink and a nudge at the audience (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off comes to mind). It can work with the occasionally tossed out reference, but to base an entire movie on that?
