Revenge of the Sith Opening Crawl

Well here you go. The opening crawl for Revenge of the Sith has been posted up on the official Star Wars website. Special thanks to FilmRot.

War! The Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless Sith Lord, Count Dooku. There are heroes on both sides. Evil is everywhere.

In a stunning move, the fiendish droid leader, General Grievous, has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine, leader of the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist Droid Army attempts to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor…

  1. So you’re saying a hero takes COURAGE? It didn’t take courage for Maul to take on 2 Jedi Knights? It didn’t take courage for Palpatine to take on the whole Jedi Order? It didn’t take courage for Genral Grievous to take on Obi-Wan Kenobi when he could have just ordered his 100 battle droids to attack him? It didn’t take courage for Darth Tyrannus to fight both Obi-Wan and Anakin… twice?

If it wasn’t courage… then what was it?

The running theme of the prequels is “Point of view”. So yes, the Sepratists had their heroes. The Republic had their heroes.

Don’t forget… one of the reasons that Anakin turned was because he saw “evil” in the Jedi Order. Lies, dishonor, power struggles. Does that mean the Jedi weren’t heroes?

  2. I CONCUR, Whitesun.

I think the overall point is that Lucas writes lots and lots of poor & strange-sounding dialogue in these films. Heroes may be accurate, but I think he could’ve done better.

√¢‚Ǩ≈ìI don√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t like sand. It√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything’s soft and smooth”

  3. No sir, we are not missing the point. And by the way, we are two different people despite being on the same computer, mr.smarty detective.

In the simplest terms, A HERO has courage in it’s definition. Just because Maul didn’t run from two Jedi, doesn’t make him a “hero”. Hero should not be applied there.

  4. Of course Greedis concurs with Whitesun… they’re the same guy from the same computer and IP address. Why do people feel the need to do that?

Anyway, you’re missing the point of the movie. “Good” and “Bad” is often dependant on your point of view. The Galactic Senate was corrupt and slow. It had become a shell of their former selves.

From the separatist systems point of view, fighting against the Republic to gain independence was a noble act and the right thing to do.

Palpatine brought peace and security to the Galaxy. To some people that was heroic. Master Windu was about to violate the Jedi Code when he was going to kill an unarmed Palpatine. The Jedi were going to break all the codes of democracy by staging an illegal coupe against the legally elected Supreme Chancellor.

So there were heroes on both sides… who was the hero and who was the villain is all a matter of your point of view.

Oh, and Darth Maul didn’t run when he was outnumbered by 2 Jedi Knights. So is he a hero? Yoda ran… so according to you it’s ok to run when you’re outnumbered? So why then didn’t Maul run?

  5. I concur, Whitesun.

Who exactly are the heroes on the other side? Count Dooku? Nute Gunray? Presumably the other side’s hero was that battle droid that said “Roger, roger!”

  6. Didn’t you read what I wrote? Heroes are COURAGEOUS. Would you consider villains, (who are usually cowards) courageous? Of course not. Why would you argue this?

Besides, Yoda only ran because he knew Palp was gathering his clones. If you remember, sidious was originally trying to run away from him!

  7. Actually, “heroes on both sides” doesn’t really make much sense. In the dictionary a hero is described as being “courageous”. Now tell me, would you consider evil guys such as Count Dooku or General Grievous as being courageous? Neither would I! They both ran from their enemies!

  8. The crawls are just a bridge between Episodes ‘we’ never get to see. It is a way Lucas can throw out years he doesn’t want to put on film. We get lucky this time because of clone wars (cartoons). It would’ve been cool to see how Princess Leia Organa got kidnapped, or how Dooku got the clone army started, but Lucas only let us see the Clone Wars.

Spoiler, not this thread unless you call a summary of Chapters 1 – 25 of the Clone Wars a spoiler.

  9. This isn’t really a spoiler. It pretty much sums up the clone wars cartoon into three short paragraphs. This is exactally what I imagined it to say (not the exact wording though.) It pretty much told me what I already know.

  10. Mogulus, please dont tempt me.

Did you compose that poem Justin?

I wish I can watch the film with all of you here guys. That’ll be so AWESOME!!!

Anybody bringing in their lightsabers on midnight screening? LOL

  11. Oh sweet lord, I pray to the tonight
Help Lucas with the saga of the rebel fight
That we all would sleep tight
And not crap our pants at the sight
Of the final Star Wars in all it’s might…

…Oh what the hell…Can you just fast forward time just this once, please God?

  12. well i have to say, that I had read other ‘supposed’ text scrawls and knew they were not real… This one I knew was real, because It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.. I’m about as spoiler free as Traci Lords is a virgin… but I’m still expecting this movie to shock the bejesus out of me. I drink to this scrawl. It is sweet!

  13. I highly doubt anyone who took the time to post a message didn’t read it. There’s nothing wrong with reading the opening text. You don’t have to feel guilty or act like you’ve avoided ALL spoilers. SO far the only spoilers have been the movies themselves

  14. “Heroes on both sides? What does that mean?”

Heroics are just a matter of perspective. The most villainous to one side is the other side’s savior.

That just means there are certain people who’ve made a name for themselves with their wartime antics on both sides of the battlefield.

  15. It is odd that they released, I agree.

Strangely enough, this is the first one I *have* read spoilers for…the first two weren’t much more thrilling for me not knowing much going in (I am super-excited either way), so I figured this time I would just give in and read.

  16. This may sound really stupid, but I avoided reading the opening text on the main page and here to comment. Why? Because I don’t want to ruin seeing the opening of the film – I love seeing the opening in the theater for the first time.

Why lucasfilm choose to reveal it is lost on me. I’ve been trying to avoid spoilers this time ’round – at first it was easy but now I have to duck and dodge all over the place.
