John picked up the rumour of a Halo movie from Ain’t it cool in this previous post, and if news from the German site SciFi News brought to my attention from Film Rotation, is true then it’s well underway and any previous issues with Ridley Scott proving uninterested are solved.

Who? Well, as I said Ridley Scott to direct, Samuel L Jackson as Captain Johnson (continuing his games appearances after his performance in GTA: San Andreas), and Ed Harris (a fabulous actor) as Captain Keyes.

Regardless of these roles the current news is that there is no one signed up to play Master Chief, and does that really matter because for the entirety of the game the helmet is on (no spoilers here folks), and I’ve yet to complete Halo 2, so I have no idea if it comes off there.
Despite both John’s and Mediamelt’s (Film Rotation) reservations about a Halo movie, I think this has really good potential, and I’ve previously said it before. Halo provides a rich storyline, unlike a lot of other movies before it (see my previous comments on the Halo post), it’s not just a simple one line plot, it’s a more complex one weaving together multiple races and great catastrophies of war based on misguided judgements of the unknown. It has a great plot, and Halo 2 is shaping up similarly (although not in game play terms).
I really think this one is worth watching out for, and we can but pray that the rumours above are true.
right ive done research and Peter Jackson is definetely gonna be the one to produce this film(as well as the upcoming King Kong movies),followed by executive producerfrank welsh. The filming shall take place at New Zealand Wellington before May 2006, they start filming in 2006 but its a definite 2007 release. As Peter Jackson(Director and Producer of lotr) is also a fan of the game himself and would love to make the game a real life movie, which features a range of special effects says Peter Jackson.
I think a halo movie will be really good but as said before it can be seriously screwed up if done wring so if the creators do a good job, stick to the story line and don’t make it some chaotic alien invades earth horror wiht no proper story line or ending.
I think as long as they keep to the storyline of halo, as long as they dont change the plot like they usually do, then it maybe could be a cult classic.
i think the greatest idea of all is to base mc on machine! as in… dnt hav anyone actin him just build a robot like they did wit reseident evil. thats how they made the weird mutant thing. and sumone behind controlinn him.

Louis Gossett Jr is another one that could play well as Sgt. Johnson… that is if he was younger.

Lavaughn, chuck liddel has never played in a sci-fi alian shooter type movie he has never been nominated for best actor viggo on the other hand has played in an sci-fi alian shooter type movie called the prophcey which got great reviews and he got nominated for best actor for playing aragon in lord of the rings. As for sgt.johnson I still think he should be played by samual L. Jackson because he has experince in military roles and has a sense of humer. Also vin diesal does not have the voice for mc and he is busy fliming hitman the movie. People the movie will be based on halo 1 because captin keys would be dead if the moive was based on halo 2.
i read that there still not sure but there most likely to base it on halo 2 cause it has a better storyline. but personally i think it shud be based on the books startin from fall of reach to all the way to the end of halo 2. but i think if they waited till halo 3 was out and then bring out the movie that wud be awesome! as long as halo 3 turns out ok which im positive it will.

I would also like to see Scott direct the movie. I’m not too well-versed on directors and their styles, but Aliens was a gut-wrenching movie that had my blood pumping.
Ed Harris would definitely make the best captain Keyes..no doubt about it! He’s got the military roles down (The Rock) and is a terrific actor. I’m not so sure about Samuel L. Jackson. He has the ferocity to be Seargant Johnson and he can be pretty damn funny, but I think Louis Gossett Jr. (Iron Eagle II) would be better suited. He has the face and most definitely those leather lungs of a Marine Drill Instructor–He has that throaty, tough as nails voice of Seargant Johnson. Sam doesn’t have that.
Even though I don’t think they’ll reveal a face for the Master Chief, I think Vin Deisel would make the best Chief, even though he would probably bring a little ghetto to the movie. He’s got the build and the perfect voice for the job. Cortana? That’s a tuffy. I guess just have the hologram in the movie. I’m sure if Bungie could make those special effects, than big budgets can do the same and keep the same voice actress for her and make it happen. I think this will be so kick-@$$ if they stick to the books. IMHO, I think you could easily have enough material in just half of the first book to make a solid 2-hour movie. A lot of opposers to this movie think it will be just like the game–no plot, just shoot ’em up, yee-haw action–WRONG. If you read the books you will understand that this movie has so much plot untapped by the games, you could EASILY make a series out of the novels. I hope they get the job done right and I hope my message does not go unheeded.
i just wanna point out that miranda may not even be in the movie ive read bout it and they dont know wethere its gonna be based on halo or halo 2 or both so she may not even be init. and by the way lauvaugn viggo has been in more than 3 and viggo is a great actor anyway.but i still think mc shudnt be played by him.shud be played by unknown actor. though maybe…maybe,it might be good if hes a caracter init though.

Thank you for that head raiser for us Marines jordan…you are right…no one can portray us and no one, save other Marines, has any idea what it is we do for you all. But that is neither here nor there…ajk, the whole point i am trying to make here is that the actor needs to personify the MC…this is not a role that someone can take and throw their own trademark into it or adapt it so it fits them. It is cut and dry…and it needs to be portrayed like that…tht is why a no name actor would be better…he cannot call upon previous film engagements and say “Well, this worked for this character and I think MC would act like this in this situation”. MC in the book and the game has a set agenda it should not be deviated against. Viggo was awesome in the LOTR movies…but he does not personify what the MC is…the MC is always torn between protecting his men and women and following orders. That has got to be apparent in the movie or this will just be another Starship Troopers. As for who should play Miranda Keyes…I think you have a point with Ashley Judd…but I have never seen her in a commanding role…do you have any idea what it takes to command and Naval Vessel or Starship in this case…she has to be balls to the walls, no nonsense, do exactly as I say when I say with no questions asked kind of girl. She may have it…I honestly cant say. As I have previously stated…if you are going to make a movie with military personnel then USE military personnel. We may need a little coaching but the important thing is that we know what is going on and we dont need to be coached in how to act like a military minded person. Again, the movies budget needs to stay with the visual effects cause this is going to be a hit or miss picture…and while i am at it…do any of you have any more info about the movie or another website you all visit for info…i read the x-box magazine so i am up to date with the proposed actors…and my vote still goes to the Transporter guy…but hit me up and let me know.

ajk…do you want to know why movies like this fail with big name actors? because sure the big names are nice and yeah they do have good films to their credit…but look…none of that save Lord of the Rings can prepare you for a world that is completely imagined in someone elses mind. Why do all war movies portraying Marines or anyone in the armed forces suck? cause they use some big name actor who doesnt know a damn thing about war or being a Marine. They cant talk like us, they cant act like us, and they sure as hell cant portray us on screen. For this type of movie to suceed they will need actors whose screen presense cannot be compared to another movie. that detracts from the movies premise when you compare the main characters acting to another acting job he did before. As much as people may not want to admit…this movie is going to be huge whether stupid or not…and its success is going to be due to the acting quality not the visual effects. If you want make a successful video game to movie adaptation then use the people closest to the project…dont try to bypass the talent you already have. And as I already said…Marines to portray Marines is the best they can do. The only other film (fiction) I have seen Marines properly portrayed in was Aliens–The Colonial Space Marines. However Sgt Apone was a former Marine so that is probably why it was convincing. Viggo is a good actor in the films he played and maybe he does have the experience…but his personality does not personify the MC. If you dont understand that then you are hopelessly lost in fan fare. I still believe the best way to make this movie is with CGI. Money is going to be a big deal and ators is not what it needs to spent on to secure big names…the visual effects alone are going to be outrageous if they stay true to the game. The sets are going to be enormous…so get someone who will come into this wholeheartedly and will give their all to personify the character…not their screen image.

Wow…here we go again…you all must be like teenagers or something judging by your comments about who should play what characters. Did none of you read my previous comments way up top…they were typed long ago…the actor does not matter…WHAT DONT YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT. For a movie like this to succeed, you need way more than just a big name actor…sure he or she will bring people to the theatre but just because they are a big name actor doesnt mean they are fit for this genre of movies. There is a big difference between Action/Adventure movies and Comic/Video Game to movie. They are completely different genres. You can be an acomplished action star and suck ass in a comic book movie…need an example…Halle Berry…awesome in dramas such Monster Ball and Swordfish but she sucked balls in Catwoman and X-Men. These big name actors you all keep mentioning are good but not for this type of thing…another example…Casper Van Dien…great in Starship Troopers but sucked in all his other movies. You all are still just satisfied with visual effects and big name actors…the failure of the new Star Wars movies is a perfect example…yeah they were visual stunners but the plot sucked and was unconvicncing and if you disagree then i know for a fact that this blog is full of kids. The most important thing for this Halo movie to succeed is a good plot and actors who can personify the image Halo is trying to get accross. The personality of the characters needs to be there cause if it is not then the graphics will not matter. Sure die hard fans will go and still see the movie but look at how big this franchise is…will you really be satified with just another Episode 1, 2, and 3 or do you want to see a movie that has a serious chance of succeeding as a groundbreaker for these type of movies. Halo is going to set the stage for these type of movies simply because Microsoft has the money to destroy every other frachise out there…i wouldnt think that they would put out a poor product but i didnt think it was possible that Star Wars could suck either.

has played in hardcore war movies [ G.I Jane] and has great hand to
hand combat skills + viggo has been nominated for best actor in Lord Of The Rings and has been praised for his role as a Genareal in G.I. Jane. Jason Starthen on the other hand has never played in a war movie and Jason Starthen has never been nominated for best actor, I do know that Jason Starthan has played in some acton movies such as
The One, The Transporter and the Transporter 2 but none of those movies have had great reviews. Viggo on the other hand has played in the fowllowing action movies G.I. Jane, Hidalgo, Lord of the Rings 1, Lord of the rings 2, Lord of the rings 3 he has also played in the movie prison and he has just finished filiming The history of violince all of these movies got good reviews. So you can see Viggo has the acting skills the hand to hand combat skills and the experience in war movies, all of these talantes make Viggo the best for master chief. Also I think Samual L. Jackson Should play Sgt. Johnson and not a real marine because Samual L. Jackson is the beter actor. I do think however it is a good idea to have real marines to play the marines in the movie.

I agree with jordan and his comment about Viggo not playing the MC. He is not suited for this genre…he is more suited for the fantasy epics. My vote for MC is Jason Stratham of the Transporter. He is a kick ass actor and has proven his mastery of combat arms. However, to fully personify MC, jordan is right…Eric Nyland. Now if the movie isn’t going to be a prequel then we dont need to worry about what MC looks like cause he shouldnt be removing his powerarmor. We need someone who knows MC inside and out and can fully bring his personality to the screen cause that is way more important than the special effects. As for Sgt Johnson…in the second game he is referred to as a Master Sergeant which in todays military to pick up that rank would take well into 18 to 22 years give or take 2 which would put him around the age of 40. So Sgt Johnson needs to be portrayed by an actor of that age and my vote would be to find a real Marine Master Sergeant who is a grunt and have him play the part. An actual Marine grunt MSgt will know exactly how to talk, walk, and run his unit. Get someone with some combat experience and have his actual unit come in as extras. What could be better than real Marines playing future Marines!!! Plus the fact that I am Marine and would love to be an extra too!!!!!!!!!! Hope you’re listening Hollywood!!!!!!!

i haven’t had time to read all the posts so i don’t know if anybody pointed this out or not, but master chief isn’t gonna be black for one simple reason, he has a white-man’s voice. if you listen to him in the game, he sounds like a white man with and overly exagerated low pitch. trust me he’s no samuel l. jackson. i’d say get that guy who does al the movie trailer voice overs to be his voice.

If the folks at Bungie were smart, they’d wait until the end of Halo 3 (current project) to reveal the MC’s face. The funny thing is, I’ve only ever seen the guy who voices the MC’s face once, and it was very briefly on the documentary for Halo 2 (Collectors Ed.). What does that tell you?
Also, someone went through the books and games and stuff and declaired that the MC was in his fifties at the end of Halo 1. THe voice actor is about that old.

I was thinking about this…and I think for the Halo franchise it would be a positive move on their part. Do what the Wachowski Brothers did with the Matrix…have a tie in to the movie with a video game…but obviously in this case it would be a movie to tie in with the game. The Fall of Reach would be a perfect setup movie to ge things started…cause you know with all the revunues the games have spawned and obviously what the movie will do whether good or not…there is bound to be sequels. About the rumors about Ben Afleck and Tara Ried…man, I really hope you are kidding because they are some of the worst actors I have ever seen. And to justify it because i see by some of the other blogs that most of you need it…look at Daredevil. That was the dumbest adaptation i have ever seen…Affleck is not an action movie star. And Tara Ried…name one that succeeded that she was a lead character in that didn’t suck. And to Pooder, Eric Nylund did not just make up what he wanted for the games…as Phil B said…he was there throughout the game making process and was watched and edited by Bungie…if he wrote those books on his own it would have been a big copyright scandal in which he would have been sued. The franchise is too big and was too big when the game came out to be penned by someone without Bungies go ahead. Again I am noticing that people are saying these big name actors need to portray these Halo characters…which again leads me to believe that there are just a bunch of children on here blogging…look at my previous comments and see what I mentioned about plot and acting talent playing a BIG role in these movies. A bad movie can destroy a franchise…interest will be lost…people who have no lives will protest and picket movie theaters as well as game sales which will lead to a drop in revenue for Bungie due to bad sales and bad promotion. If the plot and then the acting (in that order) are not secured first then it will not matter what kind of visual effects the movie has. The worlds the game and books make will be lost and never again will the interest be as high. Now, you hard time game fanatics who never leave your living room couch may disagree and say that the true fans will keep Halo alive…but you need to remember one thing…the game has a mature rating and is not meant for kids (if you follow the rating guide lines and i know no one ever does but we can agree and disagree on that later). The movie is going to be geared towards a young audience…is it sinking in yet or do i need to elaborate more? That means that Bungie and who ever directs will rely on big name actors, whose mere screen presense is supposed to put you in awe, visual effects, and in turn sacrifice plot and depth making for a visual stunner but not much of a movie (think the new Star Wars). There has been lots of talk about how Microsoft wants to be a big part of this and people are afraid that it will be ruined due to the fact that Microsoft knows nothing about making movies…and I somewhat agree and disagree with that but think about this…there is an upside to Microsoft doing this…They have the money to make an absolute visual thriller and secure good actors and because it is their first movie then they are going to want it to do extremely well so as to promote their name too. This may lead to a lot more spin offs if they think they can do it and God knows they have the money to do it. This will be a movie that is going to be pure speculation until we find out who will direct and who will act. However…soundoff…what do you think.
“he had tousled brown hair” “a few freckles were speckled across his cheeks” thats a quote straight from the fall of reach. the chief is not black and has brown hair. eric nylund isnt just some random author who decided to write a book based on halo, he was contacted by bungie to write the book and was present throughout the entire developement process of the game – the book was written alongside the game, not afterward. His books have been read and re-read by bungie to make sure they are accurate.
but back to the movie. i doubt microsoft would rush it and end up with the classic rubbish game/movie adaptation, that could seriously damage the games reputation and since halo is what moves xboxs off the shevles it wouldnt be a very smart move on their part. But then again thats just my opinion.

Look…”i.d.” already signed-off to make a “Doom” movie…and “Blizzard” just might sign-off to make “Starcraft:Ghost” as a movie…your all breaking my heart. My point is…if Ridley Scott or James Cameron make this movie…and “Bungie” gives the Halo movie rights to them…please make it worth it,the Bungie industry might blow off the Halo sales money on this film, and what does it leave them? Ok, Samuel L. Jackson as Sgt Johnson…terrible. Vin Diesal as Master Chief…are you nutts?? In order for a movie to succeed…you must have characters who are not only convincing on the screen, but off the screen as well as in other movies. The only movie in which Vin was convincing was as Riddick in the Chronicles of Riddick, in which he played a fearless and heartless fugitive. Samuel L. Jackson…I would say as to his best performences…Unbreakable and Rules of Engagment…none of which has any bearing whatsoever to Sgt Johnson in the games. Master Chief, both in the books and in the games is compassionate and is usually torn between doing what he is ordered and what would be best for the safety of his men and women. Yes, he does always end up doing what he is told, but in the movie that is something that needs to be very apperant…that he does do what he is told but not because he is ordered to, but because he has a true dedication to the survival of the human race and a sympathy to the sometimes futile attempts of the humans. As for Captain Keyes, the character needs to be military minded. As an officer in the armed forces he needs to have complete self control and an unshakable devotion to the safety of his crew, him being the top ranked official of a naval vessel (Starship) he needs to be one of the most convincing characters of the movie…his part is just as important as MCs. And again, MC needs to be a no name actor whose face, as in the games, is never seen. It is important that we not be able to relate his characters actor to another movie star. That is the failure of most game to movie and comic book to movie addaptations…they want to use some big name actor so as to raise ratings and make people want to see the movie, but subconsiousely you begin to compare that character to other charactors that actor has portrayed and begins to eat at the movie. In order for these type of movies to survive, that (the convincability) must be the premise…you should not be able to compare the acting or character to anything the actor or actress has previously done. The movie must ensnare your mind and senses…it must make you lose yourself to the outside world for that hour and a half. When a movie can that, then it is truly a good movie. Spiderman is the only addaptation that I have seen that gives itself justice. Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat, and the second X-Men were pitifull…the movies were only made to profit off the games and or comic books successes. They were total bombs…if you disagree then I would say that you have no knowledge of how important the plot as well the acting must be or you are a child and still satisfied with just the visual aspect of the movie. Here is an example…Godzilla (the American one) good plot but horrendous acting. Need another…The Hulk and the Punisher…good lead characters but horrible supporting actors. And the best example…ALL 3 new Star Wars movies…the plot and acting was sacrificed for great visual graphics. The movies were stupid and the actors should be shot along with the director for allowing such a poor product to be allowed on the public with the thoughts that it might actually live up to the first three. So…soundoff…tell me what you think.
Now before I start I will state that I am a very big fan of the Halo franchise. If you look at all the other video game to movie adaptations then you will realize that not a single one has been any good with the exception of Final Fantasy Spirits Within…and I say that because the movie had a good plot, the CGI was fantastic, and the movie could not have been done with real actors. This is what is going to happen with Halo The Movie. With that universe and the technologies the humans and covenant alike posses, it will not be able to be matched with real actors incorporating CGI effects…it will look like a fairy tale at best. The movie should only be done with CGI. The story is being penned by someone whose only movie to credit was not all that great. Had they allowed the author of books, Eric Nyland, to write the script…we would at least be confident that the movie will follow the game’s footsteps. BUngie wants the movie done as fast as possible and has settled for rights to the movies production…which means the casting and filming will be rushed leading to a very poor product and possible destruction of the franchise. Now i know that may sound stupid but look at this…has Mortal Kombat produced an even half ways decent game since the movies…has Tomb Raider even looked the same since the pitiful portrayal of Lara Croft by Angelina Jolie…and here is the best one…Doom…need I say more. That movie isn’t even following the basic premise for the Doom story. The MC needs to be played by some no name actor so as to add to the mystery that is the MC. Cortana would be best staying as a CGI character and not being modeled after any real actress. Sergeant Johnson would be awesome if played by the man who played Sgt Apone in Aliens. And as for Captain Keyes…I would go with someone like Anthony Hopkins, and i say that because it needs to be someone who can play their character with complete and utter self control. As for directors…there are only two people who could pull this off and I highly doubt either will…Ridley Scott or James Cameron…and I would go with James Cameron. Sound Off…what do you think??

Unless Bungie keeps a strangle-hold on the entire write-up, casting, and story along with the directing…the movie will be a complete bomb. I dont know if all you know this, but MS made sure when it signed up with fox and universal that bungie would have a hand in every creative decision. So, if they havent shown MC face in the game, i doubt they will in the movie so really whoever plays MC it doesnt matter. Also, they would not let fox or universal cast stupid people into parts. Remeber, when MS put out that they wanted a movie deal they were turned down by many because they wanted “too much control” in this case, howver, control is a good thing. I would much rather have bungie watch closely over decision than see hollywood ruin this movie like every other vidoe game movie. I can tell ya master chief aint going to be black. If they are going to make a movie they would probably change the story alot or they wouldn’t make a block buster cause the story is good for a game, but not really for a movie. Using the halo soundtrack is a good idea cos the halo soundtrack rocks! Ok, so its not to everyones liking but it suits the game perfectly. They should at least use some of the original tracks or similar ones to give halo players something to relate to.
If they do it based on halo 1 or part of it then if you see some of the battles from the game they should have their music from the game, so fans can say “I fought in that!” and also cos the music addds a lot of atmosphere to halo.

Exept no f***ing epics or god-damned prequels. I hate prequels, they RUINED the beloved Star Wars, not completely, bit they did. And for epics, the Spiderman movies. Also, the R-rating would work awesome in conjunction with the trilogy, bring in more audiences to the game and movie. Okay,first off, when i heard about a possible Halo-based movie i immediately thought of what potential such a movie could have. In my opinion, whoever they have penning this movie and directing it should definitely NOT make it into some summer sleeper hit. There’s SOOO much that can happen….think…Lord Of The Rings or Star Wars. With proper articulation and care, you have way more than enough base for a stunning epic. I’m sure there are LOADS of people who’d agree with me that they dont wanna just see another shallow “Starship Troopers” or (AAAAAAKKKKK) “Battlefield Earth” with human forces running around and aimlessly shooting at some CGI aliens. C’mon guys think about it! The entire human race faces complete and utter extinction so just how satisfied would you REALLY be if they wrapped up the ending in a nice neat package after just an an hour and a half?
There should be pain, suffering and a complete sense of hopelesness. If done right, then people will flock to see it because they can relate wit the emotional level of it all. Even the folks who dont’ fancy science fiction wouldn’t be able to resist having at least a fondness for the film.
Last point, and it’s probably a stretch but the movie should be written with intent of incurring an “R” rating. Now before you local villagers start rounding up your pitchforks and torches, hear me out. I know that those Hollywood moguls will probably pen a PG-13 movie just for the sake of all the merchandising profits they can suck from little kids and sixteen-year olds, but if the case were to make a great movie above all else, then an R-rating would be the best way to go. Why? It’s simple of course! The Halo videogame has a Mature rating and the (excellent) books based on the game are written to that extent as well. So to “sanitize” a movie based on a game already leads you in the wayward direction of “Spawn” and we all know how great THAT movie did. For example, remember for the first Halo game the level known as “The Silent Cartographer”? Well for those who don’t it began with you getting dropped onto a beach with your troops and storming an enemy-held position D-Day style. Imagine it, a scene from the movie drops Master Chief down and there’s explosions all around! People from both sides falling from the hail of gunfire! Limbs being blown off! And after a grueling offensive struggle, the Master Chief and whoever’s left standing triumphant over the fallen enemies. It’s “Saving Private Ryan”-esque feel will captivate audiences. Case-in-point people, space aliens or Nazis, it’s a WAR movie and people die bloody violent deaths in war. If you want to see soldiers run across a field shooting at each other but without any casualties, pick up a copy of G.I. Joe Season Two on dvd. You’ll get your fix a whole lot quicker and save a few bucks.
Okay, that’s enough ranting for now and I hope people respond with their point-of views. I’m hoping for the best when it comes to this movie.

we’ll about the ringworld, the whole game of halo could of been based on physical aspects of the book. But i think halo producers wanted something new and never intented to recieve ideas from other books or movies. And if it did there’s not a lot of characteristics that they would of tooken. They may have tooken the people on hover crafts, and the jaw of predator,but it was little bits and pieces if andy.

Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) and to some extent, the Wochowski Brothers (The Matrix Trilogy) were relatively unknown before taking on these featues. Apart from Tomb Raider, I cant think of a truly commerically succesful Video Game adaptation though… …Maybe all you Halo fans whould hope that Ringworld gets made in the image of Halo or vice versa
If you think Ridley Scott is likely to be involved in any kind of Video Game to Motion Picture adaptation, you really dont understand how these things work. Good directors need artistic and creative control, which such adaptations cannot provide. This is why such adaptations are rarely successful, and given to relatively unknown directors that are often accomplished music video directors having thier first attept at large budget features. Gaboman2099, It was Paul Verhoven that directed Starship troopers. Larry Niven is still alive and does not own the rights to “Halo”, hence the name being called that instead of Ringworld. The Ringworld movie was shelved in 2001, with Phil Tippet nominated as the principle Director at that time.

Here’s the deal, kiddos…
Halo could be fan-damn-tastic. If the writers were smart, they’d base the first movie off of the first Halo novel, “The Fall Of Reach.” The book itself is a fantastic setup for the entire Halo mythos, and not to mention that it gives incredible character development for a main character that previously needed none (because you’re making the game story as you go along). It would serve to put a human face inside that cold, metallic faceplate, not to mention giving the actual gamers (your bread ‘n butter crowd) what they’ve wanted all along – a human face inside that cold, metallic faceplate (repitition is fun, kids).
But this cannot, and I repeat, CANNOT become another Uwe Boll crapterpiece. Nor can Paul W. S. Anderson come within 500 miles of the script, set, what have you. The game is famous not only for its virtual cornucopia of exemplary technical achievements (mouthful and a half), but the story is bar-none the best I’ve seen since Metal Gear Solid. And add three super-bad-Dolemite-classic novels to that.
You’d have to handle that thing with the utmost care, like an atom bomb. If you drop it too soon or incomplete in any way, and it’ll take the creators and the intellectual property with it in the blast. Drop it with grace and precicion, and the only thing you’ll blow away is the audience. I know the chances of anyone connected to the project (if it even really exists beyond hearsay and scribbled napkins) actually reading this is slim, so I’m sure common sense won’t even get the chance to fall on deaf ears. But make no mistake – this is the blueprint.
And what about GTA? Too much story in one game to pack into one movie. Simple as that. What makes GTA great is the fact that it’s a game first, story second, yet both parts treated as a cohesive whole. An open-ended interactive experience with a plot. Sure, there’s a goal…but the fun lies in taking your damn sweet time getting there. Halo, on the other hand, has this rich backstory that simply isn’t being taken advantage of. Or capitalized on. But that’s really the same thing when it all boils down, right?
I can’t call that 2 cents. It’s really worth a lot more than that, if it gets put into the right hands. So there’s my $8 admission to anyone who wants to make Halo in a way that’ll actually do justice to the game. Which translates into my $500,000 royalty check when it becomes the first game-based movie to actually bust blocks “Star Wars”-style. It should be coming any day now…right?
Yes, Halo is similar to ringworld…but only as far as the pictures on the video game case and niven’s book resemble each other. Halo is a fantastic game with a great storyline. Ringworld, however, is much more developed. It’s up there with trek and every other alternate universe. You have the kzinti, the puppeteers, and all the colonies of mankind. And, as someone else mentioned, Ringworld has got to be a million times bigger than halo. Ringworld circles a SUN, whereas the halo artifact only orbits a planet

I, personaly, could care less if it’s based on a book. The game was kick ass. Yeah, sure there were similarities to the book, but that doesnt matter. They didnt turn the book into a game. They took interesting aspects of the book and formed there own story. The elites mouths do look like predators, but the rest of them does not. You can take ideas from other movies or books, theres nothing really wrong with that. Generals incorparate other strategies that they think could win a future battle. It’s nature.
The idea of having one large ringworld was thought of by Space Organizations long before the book ringworld was made. After all, it is physics, that centripetal force would allow the ring to have “gravity” on the inside of the ring so that the spinning would allow the ring to have acceleration at 9.8 m/s. Even today, Nasa is using this idea in a lot of their projects. But anyways, I think it would a great idea to make a halo movie. The plot for halo is the most complex and suspenseful story I’ve ever seen in any video game. This could possibly end the stereotype that any movie based on a video game sucks. I think Ed Harris would be a perfect role for Captain Keyes, and as for Masterchief…can anyone say Bruce Willis? Or maybe Vin Deisel b/c Willis is gettin old, lol
I’m reading “Ringworld” again now, after completing “Halo 2”. The idea of an Earthlike surface on the inner-side of a ring floating in space is the obvious similarity. I’ve noticed a few others…
* Throughout much of “Ringworld”, the protagonists are riding around on hover-cycles. Similar to the Ghosts in “Halo”.
* The “Ringworld” is of mysterious origin. Most of the story is spent trying to figure out who made the “artifact”, as they call it. This plot device is used in “Halo” as well.
I don’t really think those two things had much influence on “Halo”, but I’m pretty sure the creators of Bungie’s game had visions of “Ringworld” in their head when they decided to base the game on the inner-surface of a gargantuan ring in space. They certainly could have ripped off a lot more cool ideas from the book(s)… floating buildings, crazed natives, monofilament swords, shadow squares.
While we’re at the business of attributing influences… the Covenant Elites have mouths very similar to Predator and kind of have an elongated head like Giger’s Alien. And I agree with the poster who pointed out the “Starship Troopers” similarities. It’s especially true in “Halo 2” (space marines fighting giant bugs).

The ring and its structure borrow heavily from Larry Niven’s Ring World. The rest of the story doesn’t though.
Actually Halo borrows more from Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels. The ring in Halo being more akin to a Culture Orbital. The naming conventions of the drone Guilty Spark 343 is also similar to the names given to the Culture’s Minds and GSV’s.
