Romantic Comedies are funny creatures. 7 times out of 10 they can put a hyperactive child to sleep. But every once in a while one comes along that surprises you. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was my biggest surprise romantic comedy last year. It was charming, and really funny. It might also be the first romantic comedy I can remember that could really appeal to guys (because of the crazy things some women do in relationships). I thought for sure it was going to catapult Matthew McConaughey to the absolute “A” list (his performances in Frailty and Amistad should have taken him there already). But alas, he’s still pretty much considered a solid 2nd choice guy. Sometimes I just can’t figure Hollywood out.
Now Variety is reporting that a sequel is in the works. Already a book, How to Tell He’s Not the One in 10 Days apparently has a screenwriter already hard at work. No word yet on the casting, but it would be a huge mistake not to bring back McConaughey and Kate Hudson.

Wow. I thought those two mixed about as well as oil and water. Also, I found the story to be uninteresting and unfunny. My girlfriend loved it, though. Go figure.
I don’t know about not being “worth my salt”, but I enjoyed this one as well, and I pretty much usually hate romantic comedies because they’re mostly only ridiculous brain farts of overworked screenwriters with nothing better to do than appeal to the masses who want nothing more than to sit back and fill their heads with air…
Anyhow, I thought this one was pretty quirky and funny. I didn’t really used to be a McConaughey fan, but recently he’s done some pretty good stuff, my favorite being Tiptoes with Gary Oldman, who, amazingly enough, played a dwarf. In the movie, McConaughey’s character’s parents and siblings are dwarves and it’s about how secure he perceives himself to be with that, but in reality, he loathes them all. He’s fooling himself the whole time and does a really good job of playing a complete (earmuffs!) piece of horrible shit.
I personally liked bits of HTLAMI10D whereas I detested The Sweetest Thing by the end of it. It was pointless, stupid and choppy. I did, however, like the onscreen chemistry of the three women, mostly between Cameron and Christina. I think those two could be the new Stiller/Penis Nose… er, Owen Wilson given the right scripts and directors.
“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” (in the tradition of “The Sweetest Thing” and “A Guy Thing”) was a romantic comedy written for men. No woman worth her salt enjoyed it, except maybe for the very end on the bridge. (Aww…)
