Hard-Boiled Sequel is now a Stranglehold Prequel Reboot

The sequel to Hard-Boiled movie may never come to pass, but more likely a movie based on the plot and character of the popular video game Stranglehold will. Except that it will be a prequel. And a re-imagining. Ok, is this even going to be in the same franchise??

We are now developing a movie of STRANGLEHOLD, and just signed the writers Fabrizio & Passmore. It will be a hardcore action film set in both Hong Kong and Chicago. We will keep some of the action set pieces of the game, but the story is different. It is a total reinvention, with a much younger Tequila. In other words, it is not a sequel to HARD-BOILED.

So not only is it a reboot of sorts, but it is a prequel as well? That’s an odd mix.

Seems like they are sticking to some of the things that made Hardboiled a hit, but then going back a step in to Tequila’s timeline and starting over. Reboots usually do involve some retelling, so the easiest way to do that without stomping on the toes of a popular film so fresh in our minds would be to go younger. This gives them more flexability and hopefully gives us something new to a franchise that probably didn’t need a reboot.

  1. Hard Boiled is my second favorite action film of all time next to Die Hard. I don’t know if I’m 100% excited to see the tequila character being played by someone else. Is Woo officially coming on board for this? Why not just do a darker style film with a jaded and angry Tequila with Yun Fat? I mean he was already quite the anti-hero in that film. It seems kinda sketchy.

  3. Well, that’s killing three birds with one stone!

    Here we have:

    1- A “reboot” (shouldn’t it be “restart”?)

    2- A videogame adaptation!

    3- A remake of Asian Cinema.

    All in one!
    I should be thrilled.
    I should be excited.
    I am not.

    The only plus to it is that a prequel could bring MAD DOG back from the dead :) :) :)

    But the truth of it is, I would much rather witness a Hard Boiled II with Woo back behind the camera and Chow-Yun Fat and Tony Leung in front of it.
