X-Men Origins: Wolverine Sets DVD and BluRay Records

Even in my greatest fanboy lust I tried to like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and at best I could find half of it to enjoy.

I thought a sequel would redeem the good parts and tell us that WeaponXI was not Wade Wilson, but then we were told they were holding off a sequel until they saw the DVD sales results.

I am not saying that threat encouraged a fan reaction to pick up a movie they hate, but someone out there bought it. And not just modestly. Currently the release is holding a fair number of records.

Latino Review reports:

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment Announced Today That X-Men Origins: Wolverine Now Holds the Record as the…

#1 Best Selling 2009 New Release Blu-ray Disc

#1 Title On Cable VOD For The Second Week In A Row

One Of The Top 10 All Time Best Selling Blu-ray Titles Ever

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine continues to break records on the home entertainment charts. “The resounding success of Wolverine on Blu-ray reveals that the consumer still craves their movies the best way possible” said Mary Daily, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

It was said that they were holding off on Wolverine 2 to see how the retail sales results came in, and it looks like they got their green light as we already heard they are working on the film.

Wolverine was not a great movie by any stretch of the word, yet it raked in the cash like crazy. It boggles my mind that a movie that SO MANY tear up and insult could still get that many in the theaters and buying the discs.

  1. The point gang is that Fox is announcing the numbers now, BEFORE the rest of the heavy hitters from the summer weigh in. Love it or hate it, Transformers 2 was the biggest at the box office this year and will translate into crazy numbers on dvd/blu. Star Trek (my fav of the summer) also did great, better than Wolverine and will also move a serious amount of units this holiday season. Fox can trumpet today cause after numbers get announced from Transformers 2 next week, Wolverine won’t be the top dog. After the holiday dvd/blu season is done with, it probably will fall in each category they reported to the same place it is for the overall summer movies, which as of today is #8.

  2. After all the controversy over leaked unfinished versions of the film we get this odd news. Wolverine was a mediocre movie that doesn’t deserve these high sales.

  3. I didn’t think the movie was great either, or even good, but it wasn’t terrible in my opinion. The film still had an enjoyability factor, but I think that was due to the performances by the actors involved with the movie.

I really wanted to love this film, but I just couldn’t after seeing the final product. I do hope they make a sequel because I really like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and I hope he can get a proper Wolverine movie made.

    1. I enjoyed the movie too! I don’t understand why everyone tore it apart. It wasn’t the best movie ever, but come on … it was nowhere near as bad as everyone made it out to be. Personally, I can’t wait for a sequel!

  4. Are you sure its not all just one big conspiracy!

It’s seems like the info that comes out of the studios is nothing but hearsay! I mean come on, Who in the right mind would pay money to buy this movie? Whose to say they didn’t just make up the DVD release Estimates just so they can pump out another shitty X-Men Movie.

    1. That’s funny….Fox employees buying up DVDs and Blu-Rays so, in the long term, they can keep a job long enough for Wolverine II. I’m sure that’s really not the case, but if folks think little kiddies can go for spins in homemade weather balloons, you never really can tell.

    2. That this has outsold EVERY other BluRay release all year is hardly a conspiracy or hearsay. These statistics come from the retail outlets, not by some random person on the street making up numbers to bribe a second film.

This not being reported from the studio, its being reported from retail statistics and cable MOD stats.

    1. The reason there was no surprise with Twilight was because of the ridiculous following it already had because of the books alone and the demographic for both that ate it up. The lines alone at Comic Con alone should of been revealing enough that the movie would succeed just as the next one will.

      1. Edit: ignore one of those “alone”s up there, I do that a lot for some reason. Probably because I don’t proof read before hitting that damn “Leave Reply” button.

  5. I’m gonna agree with Matt that it probably wasn’t the fanboys that bought this one. I know a few people who aren’t into comics at all that picked up this dvd. I, on the other hand, have no intention to.

  6. I don’t necessarily think it was all of the fanboys (although I’m sure plenty liked that stupid movie still) I think it had more to do with the general public wanting some of those big dumb summer movies on dvd and this just so happened to be the first released. The as nearly crappy Transformers 2 (script-wise at least) will probably do incredilby well also.

I’ll keep my wallet in my pocket a bit longer for the only decent Blockbuster this past summer, Star Trek (the wake of the writer’s strike really fucked us good this year. Hopefully the aftermath subsides by next summer. Inception!)

  7. My guess is despite the movie not being good, people want their collections to be complete. So if they already have X-Men 1~3, then they need to have Wolverine as well.

    1. I suspect that may be the case as well- but to be fair, it wasn’t a horrible picture to start with. Just disappointing.

The real die-hard fans of the film will shell out for the Blu-Ray without question, due to the truckload of “exclusive” Blu bonuses and the like. I still might skip that- I’m kind of weary when it comes to a million featurettes. If they aren’t informative, show neat stuff, and just basically kiss their own rear ends, I’m usually not liking it. I feel I wasted time and money. Or perhaps some things are worth seeing once or twice but you are better off having teeth pulled without tranquilizers much less novocaine…
