If these early major awards are any indication, the “Best Picture” category at the Oscars this year is going to be wide open. Today, the third major awards group, The New York Film Critics Circle, handed out their annual awards giving the top prize to the Sean Penn flick “Milk”.
It is the third major awards group, and the third different movie to win:
LA FILM CRITICS: Wall-E
NATION BOARD OF REVIEW: Slumdog Millionare
NEW YORK FILM CRITICS CIRCLE: Milk
This is going to be a race to the finish.
I should also mention that “Man on a Wire”, the documentary about the man who walked a high wire between the twin towers has won “Best Documentary” from all three groups so far, and that “Penelope Cruz picked up her third award for the season, named best supporting actress by all three groups for her role in director Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.””
The only major awards contender film I haven’t seen yet is “Happy Go Lucky” (which I’m watching later today), but lead actress Sally Hawkins won Best Actress for New York AND Los Angeles, and director Mike Leigh took home the New York prize as well.
And just in case I haven’t emphasized this enough yet:
BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR = Wall-E
Yah…MILK was a good movie but i still think The Dark Knight should have won…..
MILK WINS BEST PICTURE IT WAS AWESOME…..
MGRADY
I saw Milk last evening with my two 18 year old grandkids…we all loved
the movie—the story—and Penn’s acting. We three want to see it again.
We think for sure it will win the Best Picture.

Milk is an excellent pic as is Slumdog and Frost/Nixon; one of these three will take best picture.
I hadn’t seen Milk yet, so my choice go to
WALL-E!!!!!!
wall-e or the dark knight, i’ll be happy if either one wins. For me personally i would pick wall-e. To me wall-e has a returning theme that i can go back and watch this movie more then one time. the dark knight has that same effect, but it feels like you need a rest before watch the movie again i mean a long rest. :)
I grew up during the Nixon years, I remember watching the daily news every night with my father which pretty much was all about Nixon at the time. Seeing how most movies are so skewed for sensationalism and liberties are always taken, I have no interest in seeing this film as I lived it on a day to day basis.
I also have no interest in seeing Milk, I am a fan of Sean Penn but not so much of these artsy films the critics go crazy over.
I am looking forward in seeing this movie. I am also interested in seeing Frost/Nixon. Both these bio moives are a good choice for history buffs.
DA
can someone explain to me how say the ny critics award and the la critics award affect say the oscars, or is there really no affect ?
dark knight might get nominated but it wont win.
and wall e will get nominated …for best animated picture. but that is where it will end. it will not get a best picture nom.
benjamin button will take out .best film, best director, best actor and sweep tech awards.
The Dark Knight was my favorite movie of the year but I wouldn’t be upset if it does not walk away with an Oscar, doesn’t increase or decrease my love for the movie either way. I don’t expect it to be on the recieving end of a nomination..for whatever reason.
I’m with John, if Wall-E does not at least get a nomination for Best Picture..then something is wrong with the world.
John, you’re going to love Happy-Go-Lucky, the only theater playing it in Houston is 40 miles away from me and I’ve seen it three times…easily my favorite movie of the year so far.
I don’t know if Milk really deserves Best Picture, I felt about it the same way I felt when I saw The Reader. There are a few seemingly significant moments that were meant to touch me emotionally and for some reason, I didn’t. I found them both a little distant, not a lot, but enough for them to not win Best Picture.
not on topic but the new dragonball trailer is online and well no suprise that it sucks but heres the link courtesy of comingsoon.net

While I absolutely love “The Dark Knight”, and consider it one of the best movies of the year. I can understand where critics are coming from with several different critics awards going to films like “Slumdog Millionaire”, “Milk”, and even “Wall-E” to a certain extent. Those films in my point of view have more to say artistically. And critics go for films that touch on subject matter, that is different from films we see day to day.
Best Picture of the Year=The Dark Knight. I will be so pissed if it gets ignored
*** oops…award not oscar lol
they also gave Brolin the best-supporting actor oscar…i havent seen Milk so i cant comment but…..lol
also the Dark Knight received a TON of praise from critics but most New York-based critics didnt like it at all! (check Rotten Tomatoes for the 16 bad reviews out of a possible 263!)
JOHN: You’ve seen both Milk & Dark Knight….was Josh Brolin better that Heath???
Best Pic Of Year: The Dark Knight
how can they name Milk the best pic
