Daniel Craig Suggests That Two Films May Be Enough?

Daniel-Craig-Bond-21We have some off putting news today from the mouth of Daniel Craig. Apparently he isn’t sure if he’s going to be around for a third. We get the following scoop from our friends at monsters and critics:

The actor – who reprises his role as the British spy in upcoming movie ‘Quantum of Solace’ – says despite signing a contract for another two movies in the franchise, he doesn’t know whether he will return to the character.

He said: “I did sign on for four so a piece of paper says there are two more to do. But let’s see how this one goes. In the film business, everything doesn’t always go according to plan. We’ll wait and see. If it goes wrong, we’ll have to rethink things.”

I doubt Craig will be able to bail on Bond, save for death. He’s locked down for 2 more films and I can’t see the studio letting him off the leash. Craig may certainly walk away from the project, but I would suspect that this would be at the cost of a drawn out legal battle.

I am personally guessing that Craig is sowing seeds in discontent so that when his four films are done he will demand more money and have these remarks to site as history. I could be reading into the situation way too much however, he could’ve just said the above statement as a placeholder for “I dunno”.

Regardless of his future plans, Quantum Of Solace is a film that I am anticipating very much. I cannot wait to check it out.

  1. Ok, crappiest bond flick was die another day, total crap, too over the top just like the last few batman flicks before the nolan reboots, reboots are big right now and they’re working. Hands down I think casino royale was the best bond movie, I loved every second, daniel craig is what bond should be, raw stripped down a fly brit with a gun and a nice car lol, I loved the scene where his drink is tainted, it was brilliant, and QoS was action packed craig has two great films under his belt he won’t leave after 2, he’s already said in an interview that QoS had some really risky stunts but he wanted to push the envelope in the next film. Soooo hopefully we can go by his latest words and not that other crap it’d be a crime

  2. Actually, I think the worst Bond film ever is Die Another Day. The most cheesy gimmicks are in the movie Die Another Day. Die Another Day came out of left field. At least, the Roger Moore films were all campy to a certain extent. But the three Brosnan films prior to Die Another Die gave no indication of where they were headed with that movie. Turn of the century I don’t think was meant to be an excuse to make a crappy movie like that. I like my Bond movies to have just a hint of realism to them. I want Q branch back and I want things realistically done. Oh yeah, I don’t want to have to wait til the end to see the classic Bond firing his gun into the gun barrel shot and Bond theme playing.

  3. Timothy Dalton is the best Bond and he did two pictures. It’s not the number, it’s the style”!

Tim had seven (7) chances to make the 007 movie (first in 1969) but he did the contract to play it three times. Unfortunately his last one went down because of filming and contract battles…I wish that I would have seen him ONE more time…

Craig is an excellent actor but somehow I do hope that he would retire after QoS :D I wanna see as many actors as possible

  4. I hope dearly that this is the last film Mr Craig makes, the whole idea of the suited spy has been ruined. Bond would never have worn jeans and t shirts the one liners the whole bond attitude has gone. All we have now is just action movie nonsense im gutted.

  5. I personally find Craig to be not only a great Bond but a great actor period. Bar none, one of my favorites in the industry right now. I know this next thing isn’t part of the post but hear me out: In just about every Bond movie, except maybe GoldenEye or A View to a Kill they cast not-so big people as the villains. they should change that up a bit and throw in Clive Owen for the next one. He’d make a killer villain for Bond. Say what you will, but it’d be a pretty damn good idea.
Just look at Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Mission: Impossible 3, I doubt a lot of people thought he’d do good and from what I’ve seen of the movie and from what I’ve heard, a lot of us were proven wrong. Same goes for Heath Ledger as The Joker. I about pissed myself laughing so hard when I found out about that. But then I watched it and I’m not laughing anymore.

  6. I dont think he will be able to get out of the contract and I think he just wants and deserves more money.

From what I can remember he only recived $1.5M for Casino Royale and only $3M for Quantum of Solace. And that he was going to recieve $4-5M for his third picture…..but I could be wrong.

Casino Royale made $594M worldwide box office and I think Craig just wants a bigger piece of the pie.

  7. @ SLASHBEAST

I really don’t think it’s a matter of how many films they should make. The way I see it, they don’t want Bond to feel like a trilogy or anything of that nature. From Casino Royale to QoS it seems as if putting a new image on the franchise has helped ‘them’ out incredibly — and I completely agree. Furthermore, the two movies are meant to flow together, but, judging from the QoS trailer, can stand on their own as individual films unlike LOTR.

Anyway, D. Craig rox ass and I don’t see him going anywhere anytime soon. In my opinion, he’s way better than Brosnan could ever be in a roll like Bond. However, I bet his concern is with being typecast as Bond. He’s such a fantastic actor and shouldn’t be limited to just that type of roll.

  8. This is an idea I’ve been wrestling with a long time. Since the new reboot of the James Bond series, how many films should they make? Should it be trilogy? Should it go on for as long as they want? I think one of the main weaknesses in franchises is that they don’t know where to stop. Studios milk a cash cow until its dry and there’s nothing left. I persnally would love to see a sequel to Quantum of Solace and greatly enjoyed Casino Royale so I can’t really have any problems with more.

  9. Good. I liked Craig in ‘Layer Cake’, but ‘Casino Royale’ was just a bit too drawn out — That and it’s time for the producers to bring the franchise into the 21st c.

At the beginning of ‘Casino Royale’, they seemed to imply that Bond was a floating identity for the chief field operative — not discarding the history of the franchise or the other actors who have played the role. It may be time for the Albert Broccoli group to take a clue from one of the latter-day spy-franchises (Spooks, anyone?) and be willing to swap different protagonists (male, female, white, black, south asian, etc.) into the Bond role, The franchise should become an anthology series and performers as varied as Ben Kingsley, Julianne Moore and Colin Salmon should have an opportunity to play Operative 007.

It’s the way of the world and it’ll open up the stoty possibilities (and keep be budgets in check).

  10. He’s just covering because he doesn’t have anything else to say. You’re reading too much into it. Also, you “cite” something, you don’t “site” it.

  11. Hes just doing the typical British thing which is to not count your chickens. He won’t go on record saying this will be a resounding success so is basically saying that if this is a disaster of course he’ll be dropped – which won’t happen obviously. We Brits aren’t ones to toot our own horn to early lest we leave egg on our face.

  12. What’s giving any of you the opinion that

~He said: “I did sign on for four so a piece of paper says there are two more to do. But let’s see how this one goes. In the film business, everything doesn’t always go according to plan. We’ll wait and see. If it goes wrong, we’ll have to rethink things.”~

Means he is saying that he may not want to stick around? If you re-read it it clearly states that he’s taking it one film at a time. He’s signed for 4 films. But just because he did that doesn’t mean that he’s going to do all 4 if the current one doesn’t do well enough to warrent the next one.

  13. If he wants out, I’m sure there’s a way that he can get out. Just because he’s signed on doesn’t mean that he’ll automatically do more films. We learned that lesson with Terrance Howard a few days ago, didn’t we? To be fair, Howard’s character isn’t the star of Iron Man like Craig is the star of this new Bond franchise, but Bond movies frequently change actors. It’s not like this would be some great shock or anything. People may be disappointed for a few moments that he isn’t coming back, much like when Brosnan left, but then someone else will step up to the plate and take over the role, and we’ll hear John singing that guy’s praises, too:) I’ve never seen a Hollywood contract, but I’m sure that any self-respecting agent would have a “get the hell outta here” clause put into their client’s contract. There’s always a loophole, and no contract is truly ironclad.

  14. Maybe I’m the only one here who thinks this way, but I loved Brosnan’s films because in my humble opinion he personified the character. Craig’s Bond was the worst one ever. Not just because of him, but because it departed from the classic James Bond theme.

  15. I don’t think he’s saying he is too good for the franchise. He is kinda old and they way the new bond films are they require more physical conditioning and hand to hand fights. And I know Connery did one when he was 50 or something he didn’t chase man on a long foot chase.

  16. …speaking of Brosnan, the scene with Brosnan and Yeoh on the motorcycle sliding underneath the helicopter is one of the absolute worst, most nonsensical action sequences ever contrived for a Bond film. The guys in the chopper had machine guns, but do they shoot them, no. They tilt the chopper to chase the pair with the helicopter’s blades, all within a very narrow space, surrounded by tightly packed apartments. I mean, let’s say the blade does catch 007 and the girl, they’re still riding a 800lb steel motorcycle! Hello! Anybody home? How does this end well for the guys in the chopper? Beyond rediculous!

  17. I hope this is BS.

And Brosnan is not evan close to the best bond but he is not evan close to the worst. He was in the worst written Bond films and that has been the problem with bond films since Live and Let Die.

  18. What an asshole. Why sign on to be Bond if you’re not gonna stick around? He knew the job before he took it. He knew his contract before he signed it. It’s too late to go back on it now.

  19. That sounds more like he may wonder if Casino was a fluke since his name did nothing for Invasion and the Dark Materials trilogy stopped at one movie (Golden Compass). He’s only saying just because he’s signed for four movies, it doesn’t mean they’ll be made… Timothy Dalton’s Bond career went kinda the way he’s talking, but Living Daylights is an average one, Casino was probably the best Bond movie ever (or at least best of the past 30+ years)

  20. If I remember correctly, the shoot was plagued with injuries and at least one death. I don’t blame the guy for getting a little apprehensive about future outings as 007. Let’s hear is take after the movie’s done well, he’s been fully paid, and the accolades have poured in.

  21. I caught an interview with him the other day and he says he’s seen the film now and he’s very proud of it (course what else is he going to say) but I think he’s a lock for one more certainly.

I can understand that if they want him to do a Bond every two years (and they consumer most of that year with everything involved for him) then it will be a problem for an actor who wants to do other things as well.
