No More Star Wars Films

swars.jpegWe heard news recently that George Lucas was going to be releasing 2 more Star Wars films on television. It turns out that this was bullshit. We get the gospel truth and the exclusive scoop from our friends at movieweb:

George Lucas recently said that he is planning two more Star Wars movies, most likely for TV. Can you tell me anything about that?

Steven Sansweet: No, no, no, no. There are going to be two more Star Wars television series. One of them is well into production. That is Star Wars: Clone Wars. It’s a CG animated show, which we suspect will be on the air sometime next year. And then George and Rick McCullen were just now starting work on a live action series. A drama. That will probably be coming out in 2009 or 2010. He is actively at work on both of those. But the CG animated series is more adult. It has a lot of humor in it. It is very cinematic. We will be talking about that for the first time at the celebration.

Well, there was an article making the rounds on the Internet that Lucas was planning two made-for-TV movies based in the Star Wars universe. So, that’s not true?

Steven Sansweet: There is no truth to that whatsoever. I haven’t even seen that rumor. I can absolutely tell you that is not true.

I consider this to be good news. I have a strong dislike (bordering on hatred) for Star Wars 1 2 and 3. They were a huge let down and did not have an ounce of the magic of the original trilogy. I found that the new films tainted my appreciation for the original trilogy and because of this, I do not think I will watch 1, 2 or 3 ever again.

I am simply afraid that George Lucas will continue to make horrible stories in the delightful universe of his own creation. I do not want to see a man sully his own genius like that ever again. I think Lucas has been part of some of the greatest cinema ever. I think he is a fantastic storyteller, but after the last trilogy he left us wondering if he has jumped the shark or if a clone now writes for him.

As much as I am glad that no more films will be made; a part of me weeps. I want to return to the Star Wars universe for more adventures. I believe many more quality films can be made and I yearn for more wookie adventure. However, I would rather have no more films than 30 that are garbage.

I hope one day George breaks out of his carbonite prison and kills the clone that is ruining his universe.

  1. what i’m sick of is that the series is still within the time lines already told. there are prequels and sequels to the clone war story line…i say lets go beyond return of the jedi. i agree the timothy zahn was great i too would love to see a movie with those characters. i don’t know how many cartoon fans are out there but the clone war mini series that played on the cartoon network was probably the best visual media presentation since the original trilogy…i’d even go far as to say in some aspect is was better. i hope the guy involved in that series is in volved with the cgi. it happens between eps 2 & 3 and after seeing that i had such high hopes for ep 3. for example if check out general grevious in the animated series…his fighting seen were awesome…it also reveals how he got the stupid cough…anyway in ep 3 his fight seen was terrible and that’s an understatement. i’m just hoping to keep my expectaions so low on the upcoming series that whatever is shown i will will like.

  2. The series can be about smugglers/pirates flying around in a old run-down freighter while being chased by the authorities and….wait, that’s Firefly. How about a series about fighter pilots and it it can be like ‘Top Gun’ in space…shit, that’s Space: Above and Beyond. DAMMIT!

  3. “As long as there is a demand for them, they will make them. With or without Lucas.”

Just one small problem Slybr: they can’t. Lucasfilm owns the rights to the franchise. There can be no live action or animated Star Wars films or TV shows without his okay. He only relied on Fox for distrubution purposes.

As a possible TV series, I hope it focuses on Bounty Hunters, like Boba Fett. It could even star Teumara Morrison.

Do I wish George might consider getting back in the director’s chair, for something like a drama like his other famous film, ‘American Graffitti’? Well, not *quite* like it in terms of period, but what I mean is the spirit of it.

  4. Doug you are right on the money with this one!! Couldn’t agree with you more!!! You are the Man!!!

I re-watched the original trilogy recently and just wept, thinking how George ruined it all for us!!! Were is the original George and when is he going to kill his evil clone!!!????

  5. If they made movies out of Timothy Zahn’s trilogy, which takes place after Return of the Jedi, and kept Lucas away from it, then the franchise could be redeemed. Admiral Thrawn would rock on screen. Star Wars lives on in the many novels still being written.

I would recommend Zahn’s trilogy to any fan of Star Wars.

  8. Though there might not be another film coming out, perople are definitely celebrating the legacy that Star Wars has created. The History Channel is premiering a special on May 28 at 9 pm ET called “Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed”. It’s a look at the historical, political and mythological influences on Star Wars. To promote the special, they are running this contest offering the chance to win a trip to Star Wars Celebration Europe. How awesome a free trip to London to keep the celebration going!! No catches either, entry is totally free! Enter at http://www.history.com/starwars/sweepstakes

  9. What is Lucas’s obession with the friggin clone wars. We already had two films dealing with them, and a cartoon show. I would like different episodes dealing with different races a new characters from after Revnege Of The Jedi.

  10. As I said before, the “2 more movies” comment was from a reporter who was drunk at a party and misheard Lucas. Anyone who follows Star Wars knows there are 2 TV series in the works, not TV movies. Lucas has been talking about them since RotS was released. I’m suprised no one from the Lucas camp caught these rumors until now. Maybe they jusy didn’t care.

And of course there will be more Star Wars movies. As long as there is a demand for them, they will make them. With or without Lucas.

Although Lucas may not want to make more SW movies (thank god)I’m sure Fox will. You don’t just let a cash cow like Star Wars rot in the field. Eventually someone will make more movies set in the Star Wars universe. There are plenty of stories left to tell, not dealing with Luke and Han and Leia. There’s the 20 years between the movies and thousands of years before them and the entire Old Republic saga. The problem is getting Lucas’s permission to make Star Wars movies without him. Hopefully we won’t have to wait for Lucas to kick the bucket for those stories to be told on the big screen.

  11. I think there is a movie to be made in there with Bruce Campbell in an old age home playing a pissed off George Lucas bitter about his replacement raping his works.

    Then add zombies.
