Ok, file this one under “Really stupid idea that would still make a billion dollars”. There is word going around right now that a live action Sailor Moon movie could be in the works, and that the girl being looked at for the lead sailor herself is none other than Lindsay Lohan. Oh my sweet heavens.

The story comes from the Japanese magazine called Animage, who report Fox has claimed the rights to Sailor Moon, and hopes to make a live-action, English langauage version of the popular story. And that’s not all! The magazine further reports Fox’s desire to enlist the writing/directing talents of geek kingpin Joss Whedon, and the acting … erhem … talents of Lindsay Lohan, presumably for the title character.

THe Joss Whedon thing I almost find understandable… since he has a track record of doing strong female lead characters (ie Buffy and now Wonder Woman). But come on… REALLY?

You guys (ie the CRAZY HARCORE fans [not that theres anything wrong with you guys blah blah etc, you’re just more into it than the average bear]) already have your liveaction versions, ie – the Japanese-made ones. You guys know the show as the Japanese version. I know it as the American version – Serena, not as dark, mostly funny… I would like a live action movie that shows this side of Sailor Moon.

I think Lindsay is a super talented actress (love her as Anabelle in Freaky Friday, and as Cady in Mean Girls), but she is not the right girl to play Usagi, she just don’t have her innocence. At least Hillary Duff would be a better choice (she’s a good girl, plus, the character that made her a star, Lizzie Maguire resembles a lot to Usagi, so, the part would fit her just right). And for the rest of the cast? Emma Roberts would be a great Ami Mizuno, Michelle Trachenberg a great Rei Hino, Amanda Bynes has the Makoto Hino glick, and well, Lindsay would be better for Minako Aino (well, she looks more like her, the attitude, the boys, pretty much Minako). Tuxedo mask? hmm, don’t know.
Well, if the movie could be done with a new cast,it would be even better, or a Japanese-American film (like The Grudge or The Ring), best.
But, if you want to “americanize” Sailor Moon, be carefull, ok.

I totally have to agree with everyone who says that Lindsay Lohan would not make a good title character. I mean, come on! Besides the fact that she is not even a blonde and is taller than Sailor Moon, what else is there for me to say? I have watched most of the english and japanese episodes and I have to say that if there were to be a Sailor Moon movie, it would have to be loosely based on the japanese one, seeing as how it was more adult and teen oriented. They would most likely change it to a pg-13 movie or something! I have watched the Pretty Guardian episodes and I thought it was rather interesting but the characters really matched the part. I really don’t think that Lindsay Lohan would make a good title character! I think there are plenty of other actresses who could fill in Sailor Moon’s shoes!

Boy, does this bring back memories I’d like to forget. My problem with anime is the fact that in Japan, they’re better. I liked watching a few, always wishing they would be better. Now that I’m older, I now know that they are, just not here in the USA. Thing is, in Japan, these series are given a darker tone (the way I like it in the 1st two Batman films), while here, they become more toned down for kids. The way I see it, some anime CAN turn into live action films (like Neon Genesis Evangelion) while others are better off in animation (cartoon or 3D) for theaters (like Final Fantasy VII, only it’s coming on DVD; hey, I don’t like the idea for actually having actors portray the characters, especially Uwe Boll directing).

First of all, there is nothing overtly wrong with the pop cultural phenom that was Sailor Moon. Second, a L/A film has been talked about since the mid nineties, but nothing became of it. Third, I think someone got some wires crossed, unless…Joss was contacted for Sailor Moon (unlikely) and gave a sacrificial offering to Lohan just to stay the heck away from Wonder Woman (also unlikely).
Odd though, that the wish list in the rumor also includes Jennifer Garner, but John hardly mentions it. Speaking oof which, John, I think this nothing but a puff of smoke. I can see a new anime, perhaps with Lohan doing a voice. In any case…one thing still holds true:

Yes!! Finally, a movie that is perfect for Lindsay Lohan!!! She must’ve read all our comments about her wanting to be in Wonder Woman and thought “what the hell was I smoking” and decided to aim for this rubbish cartoon instead. While none of us will subject ourselves to the sheer torture of watching a Sailor Moon film, every kid under the age of 13 will. Lohan is an actor who’s target audience is children, and what better audience than exactly that for a shit Anime film. Maybe she is starting to realise what kind of movies she is meant to be in. the live action tv show from japan that was produced in 2004 was great! (looked like power rangers, but had a great story and was made for fans)
