The galaxy far, far away has long been defined by the idea that relative peace followed the fall of the Empire. However, Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 looks ready to throw that notion out the window. With the new season arriving January 20, 2027, the first official trailer shows Grand Admiral Thrawn doing exactly what fans have wanted to see him do for years: wage a full-scale war.
We are not talking about a few scattered Imperial remnants causing minor problems on distant worlds. The footage points to a much larger conflict, with Thrawn commanding forces against the New Republic and putting the galaxy back on a war footing. This creates a significant problem for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The sequel film established that the galaxy experienced a lengthy period of peace following the defeat of the Empire, with the First Order eventually emerging as the threat that shattered it. If Thrawn is leading another major war during those supposedly peaceful decades, the series is effectively rewriting an important piece of Star Wars history.
Normally, that kind of continuity change would be frustrating for dedicated fans. Here, it could be one of the smartest things Lucasfilm has done with this era. Star Wars has always had some amusing continuity wrinkles. Ahsoka Tano is completely absent from the sequel trilogy, and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s complicated history with R2-D2 and C-3PO makes parts of A New Hope play a little differently now. Fans have learned to live with those oddities, but what the upcoming season is doing is much more interesting. Instead of merely creating another headache, it could fill one of the biggest empty spaces in the modern timeline.
Filling the Timeline Gap
That empty space is the long stretch between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and Thrawn might be exactly the character needed to make it exciting. After the Empire’s defeat, the Galactic Concordance officially brought the Galactic Civil War to an end. The peace treaty placed major restrictions on what remained of the Empire, including banning the recruitment and mobilization of stormtroopers. In the current canon, the war wrapped up much faster than it did in the old Expanded Universe.
The basic history has been that the galaxy then enjoyed roughly three decades of relative peace before the First Order rose to power. Even the opening crawl of the 2015 film presents the Resistance as fighting the First Order while attempting to restore peace and justice to the galaxy. Thrawn apparently has other plans. The scale of the footage suggests this is not a minor Imperial uprising that the New Republic can sweep under the rug. It looks like a major conflict between Thrawn’s forces and the New Republic.
The Return of a Classic Threat
If that is what the series delivers, then those peaceful decades suddenly were not so peaceful after all. It also brings the current timeline closer to something longtime fans will recognize from Star Wars Legends. Timothy Zahn introduced Thrawn as a major post-Empire threat in his celebrated Thrawn trilogy. In those stories, the brilliant Imperial strategist gathered the scattered remains of the Empire and launched a new campaign against the New Republic. Thrawn was not another Sith Lord or Force-powered supervillain. He was a frighteningly effective military commander who could outthink his opponents and turn a weakened Empire back into a serious threat.
Bringing Thrawn into live-action always created the possibility that Lucasfilm could borrow some of that DNA without simply adapting the novels. Ahsoka Season 2 now looks like it could finally let Thrawn operate on the scale that made him such a great villain in the first place. That is where this retcon starts to look less like a continuity problem and more like an opportunity. The sequel trilogy left Lucasfilm with a difficult corner of the timeline to navigate, and this new direction could provide the necessary stakes to bridge the gap between eras.
