Studiocanal has announced a major event for fans of crime cinema as it prepares to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Michael Mann’s groundbreaking thriller Manhunter. The studio is set to release a brand-new 4K restoration titled Manhunter: The Final Cut, which will arrive in UK cinemas on September 25. Following its theatrical run, the film will be available on UHD, Blu-ray, and digital platforms starting November 30.
A Definitive Restoration
This new version of the film was overseen directly by director Michael Mann to ensure the restoration honors his original vision while utilizing modern technical standards. The process involved a 4K scan of the original 35mm negative, with additional shots sourced from an interpositive, all restored at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna. The color grading for both the theatrical and home entertainment versions was handled by Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3, working in close collaboration with Mann to refine the film’s iconic visual palette.
The audio has received equal attention, with a new 5.1 mix created at Fox by Luke Schwartzweller. This mix was derived from the original 35mm magnetic 6-track print master, aiming to preserve the film’s unique sound design and musical atmosphere. Mann noted that the goal of this restoration is to ensure the film impacts contemporary audiences with the same intensity it held upon its initial release, effectively removing the distance that can sometimes occur when viewing older works.
