Austin St. John is pulling back the curtain on his latest creative endeavor, offering fans an early glimpse into the mythology surrounding his new character, Calder Coldwater. In a recent update from the Power Rangers Fanward Newsletter, the actor detailed how a series of sacred marks will play a pivotal role in shaping the character’s appearance, abilities, and overall journey.
According to St. John, these runes are far more than aesthetic choices. They are deeply woven into the fabric of who Calder is as a warrior. The actor emphasized that these symbols are not random additions but are central to the character’s identity and the unique powers he will eventually wield. St. John noted that the full significance of these markings remains a mystery even to him, as he prefers to discover the truth alongside the audience to ensure his performance feels authentic.
Building a Deeper Mythology
The development of Calder Coldwater is a collaborative process. St. John explained that creators Olivia and Cody are currently constructing the deeper lore behind these symbols. By keeping the full meaning of the runes hidden from the actor during the early stages, the creative team aims to make the character’s eventual revelations and moments of uncertainty feel genuine. This approach allows St. John to mirror the journey of his character, who must also uncover the secrets of his past and his abilities one piece at a time.
The visual design of these marks is still evolving. St. John shared several concepts he is currently considering, including the possibility of shaving one side of his head to allow the runes to flow from his scalp down toward his neck. He is also exploring the idea of extending these markings beyond the character’s body, potentially incorporating them onto the blade of his sword to suggest a shared history between the warrior and his weapon. Furthermore, the actor is experimenting with the use of multiple colors, each potentially representing different types of strength or historical significance.
Engaging the Fandom
St. John is actively inviting fan input as he continues to refine the character’s look and backstory. He is encouraging followers to share their theories on what the runes might represent, whether they serve as a gift, a warning, or a power that Calder has yet to master. This collaborative spirit is a hallmark of the project, with the actor noting that fan feedback has already contributed to some of the strongest ideas developed so far.
Fans interested in discussing these theories in person will have the opportunity to connect with the team soon. St. John and the Fanward crew are scheduled to appear at Power Morphicon in Pasadena, California, from August 28th through August 30th, 2026. Attendees can expect to find stickers, surprises, and a dedicated space to share their thoughts on the evolving mystery of Calder’s sacred mark
