The neon-soaked streets of Night City are calling once again. During a special stage event at Anime NYC, Netflix unveiled a brand-new trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, officially confirming that the series will premiere on October 20. The footage offers a glimpse into the next chapter of this high-octane franchise, teasing a narrative where the lines between redemption and revenge will blur.
The upcoming ten-episode standalone series is set once again in the world established by R. Talsorian Games and the Cyberpunk 2077 video game. While the first season, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi at studio TRIGGER, became a massive hit and secured the Anime of the Year title at the 2023 Anime Awards, this new installment brings a fresh creative team to the helm. Kai Ikarashi is directing the sequel at studio TRIGGER, with series composition by Masahiko Otsuka, character designs by Ichigo Kanno, and a score by Tsuneo Imahori.
For fans of the original series, the return to this universe is a significant event. The first season was widely praised for its visceral animation style and emotional depth, setting a high bar for adult-oriented anime adaptations. By shifting the focus to a new set of characters while maintaining the brutal, uncompromising atmosphere of Night City, the creative team appears to be aiming for a story that expands the lore without simply repeating the beats of its predecessor.
Meet the New Cast of Night City
The trailer introduces a compelling lineup of new characters. Weak Kingsley, voiced by Kentaro Tone in Japanese and Clancy Brown in the English dub, is a veteran edgerunner struggling to find his place after falling from grace. He is joined by D, a skilled netrunner voiced by Koki Uchiyama and Nazeeh Tarsha, who is driven by a singular, dangerous quest for revenge against those who destroyed his clan.
Rounding out the core group are Roman Carax, a young cinephile obsessed with documenting the truth in a city that has largely abandoned traditional storytelling, and Talia Yang, a character raised in corporate towers but hardened by the violent culture of the Maelstrom gang. These characters promise to bring diverse perspectives to the chaotic landscape of Night City.
Music and Atmosphere
Beyond the visuals, the trailer highlights the importance of music in the series. It features a preview of A Rusty Dream, a track written, performed, composed, and arranged by DOUDOU. The full song is scheduled for release on August 22, providing fans with an early taste of the soundscape that will define this new season.
As the October 20 premiere approaches, anticipation continues to build for this return to one of the most distinct settings in modern animation.
