Ash Williams has fought Deadites, lost a hand, wielded a chainsaw, traveled through time, and somehow survived decades of increasingly ridiculous supernatural carnage. Now, Bruce Campbell says the boomstick is officially going back on the shelf for good.
Campbell has confirmed that he is finished playing Ash in the Evil Dead franchise, and this time his retirement extends beyond live-action appearances. The actor stated he has no plans to voice the character in animation either, effectively closing the door on the long-discussed animated continuation of the Ash vs Evil Dead series.
The actor has been inseparable from the character since Sam Raimi unleashed the original film in 1981. He returned for Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness before eventually strapping the chainsaw back on for the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead. While the show earned plenty of love from fans and critics, its run concluded after three seasons. For years, Campbell spoke positively about an animated revival that could let him continue the role without the physical punishment of live-action work, but that possibility is now off the table.
While speaking with ScreenRant about his new dramedy Ernie and Emma, Campbell made his position clear, stating that Ash is done. He is not leaving an animated loophole open for himself, noting that if filmmakers eventually decide the character needs to return, they can simply find someone else to handle the voice or utilize modern technology to recreate it.
A Definitive End to an Iconic Run
This announcement marks a major change from where things stood only a couple of years ago. Campbell had previously discussed the potential for an animated project, even if development was moving slowly. However, his priorities have shifted recently. In March, Campbell revealed he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer that he described as treatable but not curable. He indicated plans to reduce his workload and public appearances to focus on his health.
Given the physically demanding nature of the role, retiring Ash completely is a logical step after more than four decades of getting covered in fake blood and battling supernatural forces. While his on-camera presence as the character is ending, his legacy remains a cornerstone of the horror genre.
The Future of the Franchise
The good news for horror fans is that the franchise itself is not going anywhere. The series has successfully started building stories that do not depend on Ash Williams, and that approach will continue. Francis Galluppi is currently attached to direct Evil Dead Wrath, which is set to become the first prequel in the long-running series. As the franchise evolves, it will move forward without its most recognizable hero, leaving the legacy of Ash Williams intact as a definitive chapter in horror history.
