One of the most iconic characters in children’s literature is returning to the screen. A brand-new Pippi Longstocking animated series is currently in development, bringing the beloved heroine to a new generation through 3D CGI animation.
The project is a collaboration between StudioCanal, Heyday Films, Submarine, and The Astrid Lindgren Company. The series is planned for 52 episodes, each running 11 minutes. Production is scheduled to begin this October.
A Modern Reimagining
Award-winning screenwriter Sara Daddy is penning the series. Daddy expressed a deep personal connection to the character, noting that her own upbringing as the daughter of a seaman who traveled the world mirrors the independent spirit of the red-haired protagonist. Her goal is to honor the wit and warmth of the original stories while ensuring the character remains an empowering icon for today’s children.
The creative team includes David Heyman, Rosie Alison, and Rob Silva of Heyday Films. The team is well-versed in bringing beloved characters to life, having previously produced the successful Paddington franchise and the award-winning animated series The Adventures of Paddington.
The Enduring Legacy of Pippi
The announcement arrives as the character continues to celebrate her 80th anniversary. Since her debut, the books have sold over 90 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 80 languages. Max Hallén, CEO of The Astrid Lindgren Company, noted that the character’s themes of courage and independence remain as relevant today as they were when the books were first published.
For fans of the character, this new series represents a significant effort to modernize the franchise while maintaining the core traits that have made Pippi a global icon for decades. With the involvement of the team behind the recent Paddington projects, there is a clear focus on quality and faithfulness to the source material.
