The Good:

If you have seen 2025 Bollywood love stories like Saiyaara, Tere Ishk Mein, and Dhadak 2, officially, you are a romance enthusiast. So, to appease your romantic taste buds with a similar concept in a different take, the Telugu film industry has released Dacoit: A Love Story, blended in a soup of love, betrayal, realization, raw action, and melodrama.

The film presents Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur as two lovers with impeccable chemistry. Their love angle will remind you of Dhadak 2. Anurag Kashyap, in an antagonistic police officer role, has taken his acting skills to a whole new level. I think he must consider starring as intimidating characters in the future as well. Villainous roles very well suit him. Prakash Raj, in a supporting role, leaves his mark.

This is a twisted, complex, and gritty tale of love and revenge. The film has no clear-cut heroes or villains. The second half of the screenplay of Dacoit: A Love Story is quite engaging and culminates in a serene yet shocking revelation. If you connect with the story, the climax would be somewhat predictable to you. It would give you the feel of classic Bollywood dramas from the 70s and 80s. Such an ending might very much appeal to the emotional section of the audience.

The Hindi dialogues in this romance-heavy action drama are intense. They draw a fine line between passionate romance and destructive obsession, which adds to the thrill. Filming widely occurred in Northern India and the Thar Desert of Rajasthan to portray a traditional north-western theme. The action choreography was impressive with thrilling background music.

The Bad:

Even though the second half is gripping, the overall screenplay is stretched and confusing. The first half of the screenplay of Dacoit: A Love Story appears a bit haphazard, which may create difficulties for you to emotionally connect with the characters and the storyline. The complexity in understanding it may cause irritation among the audience. You may literally feel that you have watched two separate films instead of one when you leave the cinema hall. The screenplay is so uneven and stretched out with mediocre direction and editing.

This romantic action-thriller has been filmed both in Telugu and Hindi. However, after watching the Hindi version, I personally feel that the creators unnecessarily remade it in Hindi. If they had considered just dubbing the Telugu version in Hindi, that would have had the same impact. What’s more, that would have saved filming effort, time, and expenses.

Dacoit: A Love Story is quite different from any regular love drama, which adds to its uniqueness. This raises its appeal among the audience. Its subtitle indicates it to be “A Love Story”. But in reality, this is a “Hate Story”. Even though the makers had devised a thrilling plot, the film’s sloppy editing adds complexity to the storyline and screenplay, which proves to be a vital turn-off factor for this romantic action drama.

The film received poor openings despite being released on a much-postponed date due to the hype of Dhurandhar: The Revenge. It runs only in select cinema halls.
