Sony has officially addressed the backlash surrounding its decision to discontinue physical game discs for PlayStation consoles, confirming that the company remains committed to its digital-only strategy. The announcement, which set a discontinuation date of January 2028, sparked significant concern among the gaming community and led to organized calls for boycotts.
During a Q&A session following the company’s Q1 2026 earnings report, Sony CFO Lin Tao acknowledged the strong negative feedback from fans. Despite recognizing the emotional attachment players have to physical media, Tao stated that the decision was reached after careful consideration and that there are no plans to change course.
Addressing the Digital Shift
The move toward a digital-only ecosystem is driven by a massive shift in consumer behavior. According to the latest financial data, digital downloads now account for 82 percent of full game software sales across both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 platforms. Furthermore, industry data suggests that physical unit sales for individual titles have seen a sharp decline in the United States.
While the company is moving forward with its plans, Tao indicated that Sony is actively engaging in discussions with retailers to explore potential solutions. One approach involves the use of code-in-a-box releases, a method already utilized in North America, which allows retailers to continue selling physical packages that contain digital download codes rather than discs.

Despite the vocal opposition and community-led initiatives like the PSBlackout event, Sony reports that the announcement has not yet negatively affected its business operations. The company maintains that because a large portion of content sales is already digitized, the transition away from physical discs is not expected to result in a financial downturn.
