More than four decades after Prince changed the landscape of music and film, his legendary story is officially making its way to the stage. Producers have confirmed that the Purple Rain musical will begin previews at the Majestic Theatre on March 12, 2027, with an official opening scheduled for April 12, 2027.
The announcement arrives exactly 42 years after the original 1984 film premiered in theaters. The Broadway production promises to feature more than 20 of the artist’s most celebrated hits, including When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Take Me With You, and The Beautiful Ones.
Bringing this story to the stage is a significant milestone for fans of the original film. The production serves as a testament to the enduring influence of the music and the cultural impact of the 1984 project, which remains one of the most successful musical films in history.
A New Creative Direction
The Broadway production arrives with a refreshed creative team following its 2025 world premiere in Minneapolis. Tony Award-nominated director Saheem Ali is set to helm the show, while playwright Peter Duchan has joined as the book writer. These changes signal a new approach to translating the film’s narrative for a live theater audience.
The production team also features music supervisor Jason Michael Webb and choreographer Ebony Williams. Longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes are returning as music advisers to ensure the show remains faithful to the musical legacy of Prince. While the creative team is firmly in place, producers have noted that casting announcements will be shared at a later date.
Honoring a Musical Legacy
Director Saheem Ali described the project as both an honor and a significant responsibility. He emphasized that the goal is to make the timeless music feel urgent and alive for a new generation of theatergoers. Similarly, music supervisor Jason Michael Webb noted that the production is focused on honoring the spirit and fearlessness of the original work rather than simply attempting to recreate it.
The original film followed an aspiring musician known as The Kid as he navigated family turmoil and intense musical competition. It remains a defining moment in cinema history, having earned Prince two Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Tickets for the upcoming Broadway run are expected to go on sale this September.
