Legendary actor Mark Hamill has shared a candid look at his decision to join the cast of Twisted Metal for its upcoming third season. Despite his long and storied career, the actor admitted that he struggled to grasp the premise of the hit series when he first received the script.
A Confusing Script Leads to a New Role
Hamill is set to portray Pope Charlie Kane in the new season of the Twisted Metal series on Peacock. During a recent appearance at FAN EXPO Anaheim, the actor revealed that his initial reaction to the material was one of complete bewilderment. Even after the production team provided him with episodes from previous seasons to help clarify the tone, he remained confused by the show’s unique narrative style.
“They sent me this script and I started reading this thing. I go, ‘What IS this?’ Yeah, it’s twisted, but I just didn’t get it,” Hamill explained. “So they sent me a link to watch the episodes, and I watched the episodes, and I went, ‘I still don’t get it.’”
Embracing the Absurdity
Despite his confusion, Hamill decided to move forward with the project, marking his first collaboration with series lead Anthony Mackie. Hamill noted that he was excited to work with Mackie and co-star Stephanie Beatriz, finding that the chaotic nature of his character actually benefited from his own lack of understanding regarding the show’s world.
Hamill described his character, Pope Charlie Kane, as an individual who is completely untethered from reality. He found that stepping into the role, complete with the character’s signature hat, allowed him to lean into the absurdity of the post-apocalyptic setting. The actor expressed that he is having a great time playing a character who is, in his words, totally nuts.
The addition of Hamill to the cast brings a new layer of intrigue to the series, which has maintained a dedicated following since its debut. Fans can look forward to seeing how his character fits into the dangerous world of marauders and high-stakes delivery drivers when the show returns.
