What We Know About The Social Reckoning (2026) So Far

The first official teaser trailer for the 2026 film ‘The Social Reckoning’ was released on the 10th of June, offering many clues about what to expect from Aaron Sorkin’s latest project.

The Social Reckoning is a sequel to the critically acclaimed The Social Network (2010), which grossed around $224.9 million worldwide. That film involved the talented partnership of writer Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher. Now Sorkin takes on a dual role of writer and director, which means a different style and tone for the sequel.

The 2026 film will star Jeremy Strong in the main role of Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook), replacing Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal in the original film, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

This film certainly has big shoes to fill, so let’s take a closer look at what we know so far about this film from the teaser trailer and whether making a sequel was really worth it at all.

Why Make A Sequel?

The plot of the original film details the origins of Facebook, how Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin originally started the company, and how the Winklevoss twins tried to sue Zuckerberg for stealing their idea.

It contained much of the real dialogue that was taken from court cases surrounding the controversy of Facebook, and with the plot wrapped up by the end, it made many fans wonder how a sequel would be possible.

This film takes on a new angle, detailing how a Wall Street Journal reporter, Jeff Horwitz, and Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen aimed to expose Facebook’s controversial internal practices.

So, why make a sequel at all? Well, a film on social media would be expected to gain popularity. The online world dominates our lives, with over 5.17 billion people using social media platforms globally.

Most of the entertainment and media we consume comes from online sources. Around two-thirds of people now prefer watching films on streaming services rather than in the movie theatre. Online listening accounts for the majority of music consumption, and even casino UK user numbers are rising online compared to in-person.

That’s why topics of social media in film are so popular. They address the current online-centric world in which we operate. In this regard, it certainly makes sense why a sequel to The Social Network would be greenlit (especially considering the financial success of the first)

What We Can Expect from The Social Reckoning

The initial teaser trailer shows us a star-studded cast, including Jeremy Allan White and Mikey Madison, who are playing the pair responsible for exposing Facebook’s secrets, in a dramatic retelling of the 2021 exposé “The Facebook Files”.

The film also shows comedian Bill Burr, who is playing a character called Charlie, a high-ranking senior executive at the company.

The narrative of the trailer showcases Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong) having to navigate criticisms of him and his company globally after significant controversy, which is sure to make for compelling viewing.
