The Future of Paramount Pictures: Top Gun 3 and Star Trek Take Center Stage
As the new CEO of Paramount Pictures, David Ellison has made it clear that the studio is shifting its focus towards restoring its position as the number one studio for filmmakers and talent. To achieve this goal, Ellison has identified several key priorities, including the development of Top Gun 3 and a new Star Trek film.
The Top Priorities at Paramount
Top Gun: Maverick’s success has left no doubt that the franchise is a priority for Paramount. The film’s sequel is already in the works, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. The new installment promises to explore the existential crisis that Maverick faces, as hinted by director Joseph Kosinski.
Star Trek, on the other hand, has two films in development. One of these will be a continuation of the Kelvin-verse series, while the other is a prequel that will explore the creation of Starfleet and humanity’s first contact with alien life.
Final Thoughts
The studio is also looking to revive its Transformers franchise, with multiple projects in development, including one that could see Michael Bay return to the helm. While a sequel to World War Z has been rumored for years, it’s surprising that it was mentioned as a priority alongside these other franchises.
In an effort to scale its content, Paramount is also focusing on its streaming service, which will feature a mix of original content and films from its studios.
