Rian Johnson Opens Up About His Star Wars Future

Rian Johnson Talks Star Wars Future and New Sci-Fi Film

Rian Johnson, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has finally addressed the ongoing speculation about his future in the Star Wars franchise. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson revealed that although he once explored ideas for a potential new Star Wars trilogy, he has since shifted his focus toward other personal projects. This announcement has sparked renewed curiosity about whether Johnson will ever return to the galaxy far, far away.

No New Star Wars Trilogy for Now

During his conversation with Rolling Stone, Johnson confirmed that there are no current plans for him to direct another Star Wars film. While he admitted to having “a great time” working on The Last Jedi, Johnson explained that his attention is now directed elsewhere. He described how the possibility of a new trilogy was once on the table, but he ultimately chose to pursue different creative opportunities.

“I’d love to come back someday, but I have to follow where my creative energy is taking me,” Johnson said.

Clarifying Rumors About The Rise of Skywalker

In the same interview, Johnson cleared up longstanding rumors about his involvement in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Contrary to speculation, Johnson explained that he and his team were never expecting to direct a third film. The decision for J.J. Abrams to conclude the sequel trilogy had been made internally by Lucasfilm’s president, Kathleen Kennedy.

Johnson emphasized that his role was always to handle the “middle chapter” of the trilogy. He also addressed fan debates surrounding the Holdo maneuver and Snoke’s death, two of the most talked-about moments from The Last Jedi.

New Sci-Fi Film on the Horizon

Although his Star Wars trilogy may not be happening anytime soon, fans of Johnson’s work have something else to look forward to. He’s currently developing a standalone sci-fi film inspired by ideas he had after completing Looper. While plot details remain under wraps, Johnson’s comments suggest it will be a return to the cerebral, genre-bending storytelling that made Looper a critical success.

What’s Next for Rian Johnson?

In addition to his upcoming sci-fi project, Johnson is also continuing work on his popular Knives Out franchise. With multiple projects on his plate, Johnson’s return to Star Wars might be delayed—but he hasn’t ruled it out entirely.

For now, fans will have to wait and see whether Johnson revisits the galaxy far, far away or carves a new path with his original sci-fi ideas.
