One of the most anticipated creative reunions in animation is officially moving forward. Composer Michael Giacchino has signed on to score Ray Gunn, the upcoming animated feature from director Brad Bird. The production has confirmed that the film’s score has already been recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.
A Longstanding Creative Partnership
The collaboration continues a successful professional relationship between Bird and Giacchino that spans two decades. The pair first worked together on 2004’s The Incredibles and have since partnered on projects including Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Tomorrowland, and Incredibles 2. Bird noted that he values Giacchino’s approach to working with live orchestras, which mirrors his own collaborative process with animators.
What to Expect from Ray Gunn
Set in an alternate future styled after 1939, the story takes place in the metropolis of Metropia. The plot follows private investigator Raymond Gunn, voiced by Sam Rockwell, as he investigates a mystery involving aliens and a celebrity named Venus Nova, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Tom Waits also joins the voice cast for the project.
Bird developed the original story and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins. This film marks Bird’s first feature project since the release of Incredibles 2 in 2018. The project is part of the ongoing partnership between Skydance Animation and Netflix.
For fans of the duo, the news of their reunion is a promising sign for the film’s tone. Giacchino described the process of working with Bird as a shared enthusiasm for the genres they grew up loving, which they aim to channel directly into their work. While the film is expected to debut on Netflix later this year, an exact release date has not yet been announced.
