Michael Jackson Biopic Delayed to 2026

Michael Jackson Biopic Delayed to 2026 – Here’s What Changed

The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, has officially been delayed. The film will now release on April 24, 2026, as a global theatrical event. What was initially planned as a single film has evolved into a two-part saga, with the second installment still awaiting a release date.

Why Was ‘Michael’ Delayed?

According to a recent report from World of Reel, the delay stems from legal concerns surrounding how one of Michael Jackson’s accusers was portrayed in the film’s original third act. To avoid legal complications, the studio opted to rewrite portions of the script and expand the project into two full-length films.

In addition to the script revisions, the production has scheduled a 22-day reshoot period for fall 2025. With over four hours of total footage already captured—including 90 minutes of concert performances—the creative team is focused on crafting a more complete and thoughtful narrative about the pop icon’s life and legacy.

Impact on Other Antoine Fuqua Projects

This delay also affects director Antoine Fuqua’s timeline for his next film, a historical epic about Hannibal the Conqueror starring Denzel Washington and produced by Netflix. Production on that film may now be pushed until 2027, as Fuqua prioritizes finishing the second Michael film.

What Fans Can Expect

While the delay is disappointing to some, it signals a greater ambition for the project. With no footage shown at CinemaCon and principal photography wrapping in May 2024, anticipation continues to build. The decision to turn this into a two-part film suggests a deeper exploration of Jackson’s career and controversies, which may ultimately lead to a more comprehensive portrait.

The second film does not yet have a release date but is likely to arrive in 2027. Until then, fans can mark April 24, 2026, as the official return of the King of Pop—this time on the big screen.
