Jon Watts Eyes Another Thrilling Ride with Future Final Destination Movie

Jon Watts Final Destination Plans Tease Return to Horror

Jon Watts, best known for directing the latest Spider-Man trilogy, has expressed serious interest in returning to his horror roots. After the massive success of Final Destination: Bloodlines, Watts revealed he’s open to helming another installment of the iconic franchise. The film grossed over $283 million globally, breathing new life into a series long known for its creative and chaotic death sequences.

Watts’ Horror Origins and Connection to the Franchise

Watts originally began his film career with the 2014 horror movie Clown. His passion for the genre is well-documented, but his connection to the Final Destination franchise runs deeper than expected. In a recent interview, he shared that his first date with his wife involved watching the original 2000 film. That experience left a lasting impression and made the recent project personal for him.

New Line Cinema approached Watts through his wife and producing partner, Dianne McGunigle, a longtime fan of the franchise. Initially hesitant, Watts quickly became excited about the creative possibilities. He penned a treatment in a week, which was later developed into a script by writers Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick.

Bloodlines: A Franchise Revival

Directed by Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, Final Destination: Bloodlines follows college student Stefanie, who battles a recurring nightmare that seems to predict her family’s violent end. With a fresh premise and a sharp cast, the film exceeded expectations at the box office.

Watts served as producer and creative consultant, helping shape the tone and visual rhythm of the film. According to Watts, the secret to a good Final Destination film is staying grounded in real-world tension while delivering unexpected, imaginative deaths.

Watts on Future Final Destination Projects

In an interview with Collider, Watts shared his enthusiasm for returning to the series. “I would be surprised if the studio doesn’t want to do another,” he said. He emphasized the importance of improving with each installment, suggesting that he’s already brainstorming ideas for inventive set pieces.

Watts added that he’s constantly scanning the world for new “Final Destination scenarios,” implying his imagination hasn’t stopped working even though production has wrapped.

The Future of Final Destination

With such a strong response to Bloodlines and the franchise gaining renewed momentum, it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of death’s design. While no sequel has been officially announced, fan demand and financial success could easily greenlight another chapter.

Watts seems poised to lead the franchise into its next era. His passion, experience, and horror instincts make him a prime candidate to keep the franchise fresh and thrilling.
