RUMOR: Christopher Nolan fixed the voice of Bane

One of the most first responses to the trailer and 6 minute prologue for the Dark Knight Rises was the difficulty to understand the dialogue spoken by Tom Hardy as he portrayed Bane. Chris Nolan responded that he wasn’t going to re-record the dialogue but was willing to commit to “altering the sounds slightly”. Well it seems that theaters have received an updated audio file to play with the clip which seems to help!

“A friend of mine who is an IMAX projectionist told me they received a new soundtrack for the Dark Knight Rises prologue. He said it’s now a combo soundtrack with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, but the cool thing about this is that they’ve cleaned up the dialogue. They’ve gone in and lowered the background noise of the plane and other things, thus making Bane’s dialogue clearer and more understandable. He asked some people after they left the movie if they could understand Bane and they all said they had no issue understanding him, and were excited for the movie.”

I guess this is good for the audiences at large but I have to admit that for some sick reason I actually enjoyed that people had a hard time understanding the character. It created an interesting characteristic that forced audiences to pay closer attention. It’s a risky move to have half your audience unable to understand the dialogue of the villain and it seems Warner Bros. is not willing to foray into the risk taking department with a tentpole as big as Batman.

  1. I completely afgree with you; yes, it was harder to understand but I rather enjoyed that gritty rawness to it and the fact that it allowed you to focus on the character more.

  2. Warner Bros and Chris Nolan made a wise decision on this. Rather than turning off moviegoers, they took the constructive criticism and made the changes on the Bane voice.

  3. If Nolan did change anything it was probably due to some third party perspective. Working on a film and knowing the dialogue might make it more difficult to judge whether or not the audience will follow or understand whats being said. Personally, its a pet peeve of mine in film, when I cant understand dialogue…
