There are two major roles, and I’m told that for Tetsuo, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been given the new script. For the role of Kaneda, the script has been given to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix. The two leads are expected to come from that group of actors.
Some of those names are older than I expected but there’s definitely some appreciable talent in there as well. I’m excited that this movie seems to finally be coming together and I look forward to more details becoming available in the near future as production is scheduled to begin this August with ‘the Book of Eli’ director Albert Hughes.

How about… Anton Yelchin for Tetsuo and James Franco for Kaneda
All of these actors are HORRIBLE choices. They are all WAY too old.
Dude, Joaquin Phoenix? Totally the best choice.
I imagine a remake with Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill. That I would watch

I can’t see… this movie at all. To even try and adapt such a brilliant anime to anything else, much less to then to let that horrid, trash-actor Pattinson even look at the script? You gotta be joking me.
Here here! I don’t really see the point. When I first heard about di caprio buying the rights to this I was confused. When I later learned di caprio wasn’t going to be in it I got even more confused.
I don’t see what they can bring to the table that’s new. Then again, if you know nothing about the anime perhaps this could be a kick-ass movie. But to those of us who’s seen it over and over again I’m affraid this is a instant dud… :(
I can see Pattinson as Tetsuo and I can really see Chris Pine as Kaneda.
IMO none of these actors look to fit any of these parts, James McAvoy for Tetsuo maybe but the rest are just like eating a bad dinner its just not going to sit right. What if they where to introduce 2 “New” actors that look like the characters they are portraying and are young enough to play the punk kid in biker gang…as i remember they still go to school in the anime right?
My vote goes to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.
Two very different actors, and yet BOTH nothing like Tetsuo.
Tetsuo is a punk kid in a biker gang. I dont want to see him played by a 35 year old.
