I suspect there there may be not a lot of Barbra Streisand fanbases out in the movie geek circles in spite of her supporting role in the “Meet The Parents/Fockers” series. But she’s about to go back to leading lady status with th musical ‘Gypsy’.
The Hollywood Reprter writes up:
Barbra Streisand is in talks to star in Gypsy, a new film adaptation of the 1959 Broadway play.
The project is set up at Warner Bros., which made the 1962 adaptation that starred Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood, and is in the early stages of being set up at the studio.
Joel Silver is producing. No writer or director is attached.
Because no director is set, there has been some speculation that Streisand will also return to directing. I actually hope she does, although I don’t know if this is the project. It is the least of my concerns. She’s only in talks to star at this point besides.
So what is my concern?
While I’m all for another musical (who isn’t?) the subject matter of ‘Gypsy’ is a huge hill to climb. The play (and previous film adaptations- yes, you can call this a remake) concerns a mother-daughter relationship in the stage world of…em..burlesque.
Guess why I’m cringing. The burlesque backdrop hasn’t really seen much popularity these days in theaters. But if Babs signs, any of the int’ friends want to chime in on who should play the daughter Gypsy Lee?
Lindsay Lohan, maybey
