Frodo Lives In ‘Hobbit’ ?

One of the most anticipated films coming out in the upcoming years has to be “The Hobbit”. Every bit of news regarding the project is one more step to seeing the “Lord Of The Rings” prequel(s). Two bits came out today. One expected, and the other that could be a bombshell.

The role call has apparently been called out for ‘The Hobbit’ – and one rather unexpected name is rumored to be in the cast. That actor’s name? Elijah Wood.

Deadline gives the lowdown over Middle Earth:

Now, the question will be which cast members from The Lord of the Rings come back for encores. I’ve heard talk of conversations with Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and possibly Elijah Wood. I’d heard Orlando Bloom was also in talks before the holidays. Returning actors will need to be locked in shortly.

The article also goes on to say that WB will handle the worldwide distribution to the “Hobbit” films. That’s logical (they owned New Line) so that isn’t the surprise.

The surprise is the “possible” addition of Wood.

Many across the lands are wondering how. McKellan as Gandalf and Serkis reprising Gollum is one thing; the characters were in the prequel books. But Frodo? That’s a puzzle. Some say it’s just that Frodo may be brifly seen at the end of the second part of ‘Hobbit’, others not at all. If the name wasHugo Weaving, nobody would bat an eye (I hope Weaving’s back anyway) but here’s my thoughts on if and I mean If this is true,?

I think there is one possible way they can get away with it, and I’m fine with it. Let’s say Frodo has kids or reading to a bunch of Hobbit children. The book he reads them is based on Bilbo’s adventures. Thus, Wood can narrate the opening of ‘Hobbit’ and, in the second film, close it out. It’s a legit possibility- he did finish his uncle’s book, didn’t he?

That’s my take on this news rumor (yes, I believe Wood has a cameo) but what do you think? Do you want Frodo in ‘Hobbit’, even if it is just a cameo and to bookend the film? Or should Wood’s Frodo not step foot yet in the shire?

  1. The second movie deals with the interval between the originla Hobbit book, and Fellowship of the ring. Frodo in this new story is perfectly acceptable, and logical.

  2. I think the Hobbit should stand on its own. With the exception of Frodo, Aragorn and Legolas, I cannot logically place any other LOTR character who doesn’t appear in the Hobbit for a cameo. Having Frodo cameos at the bookends can work if he is utilized the same way the grandfather in Princess Bride, and appear throughout the movie, otherwise its a waste of a cameo in my opinion. I can also see the hobbits appearing in a glimpse of the future, but nothing more than that.

Still I think even having that glimpse into the future would be detrimental to the film. I understand that the filmmakers want to bridge the hobbit to the LOTR, however this story stands on its own in the books, and I feel it should be able to do so. To illustrate, I enjoyed Iron Man 2, but I thought it would have been much better had it been more subtle in setting up the Avengers.

  3. Well, not to be a besserwisser or anything, but Frodo don’t have any kids, he sails away togheter with Bilbo and the Elves. He gives Bilbo’s book to Sam and ask him to finish the last chapter. So if anyone should read to children it has to be him.

I’m guessing that Frodo will be in the last of the to films.
