Burton’s Failed Superman Lives Test Footage Online

Just as I use the Star Wars Holiday Special to put into perspective about how the Star Wars Prequels are not as bad as they could have been, I now have ammunition to put Superman Returns in perspective.

One of the many failed starts to a Superman film was once in the hands of Tim Burton, and while I do enjoy a number of his films I don’t know how I could see this and think it was cool. Steven Johnson, the Special Effects creator posted some test footage of one of the Superman costumes for Burton’s “Superman Lives” version.

Now before we jump to any conclusions, this could have been a Kryptonian suit of some sort, and not the real costume, but it seems people are reporting this as the actual costume intended to be used for Superman in the film. If he simply wore this outfit while hanging out in the Fortress of Solitude, or if it was the uniform of the House of El’s security forces or something, that could still work even though it looks silly.

Looks like there were a few reasons Burton’s version never flew.

  1. Slashfilm are saying that this was Superman’s Kryptonian “Life Support” suit that he would have worn after recovering from his battle with Doomsday, kind of like an Iron Man suit to give him some power while he got back on his feet.

In that sense, I think it’s pretty awesome. And incredibly well done, considering that most people take the lazy route and go CGI these days.

It would have been something extra AS WELL as his standard red and blue trademark outfit.

It’s like when everyone saw the sh*tty early pics of the Mark I armour from Iron Man, and people were like “is this it?… That’s not Iron Man”

  2. Was it just me or did the face on the mannequin resemble Nicholas Cage? I know he was at one point attached to the Tim Burton Superman project. Was that on purpose?

  3. I hope it doesn’t rain in Metropolis. Epic Fail big time! This looks like Superman if someone from Studio 54 made his suit. Burton is alway’s trying to go for something avant garde, but this is Superman for Christ’s sake! Isn’t there a song that say’s something about not pulling on Superman’s cape? There are some things you just don’t change and Supe’s costume is one of them. Let’s just be thankful we didn’t get a glow in the dark Batman.

  4. for a second i thought that was the costume that superman came back with after her was killed by doomsday. which was the superman reborn black outfit with the green s. but then again they could have been going a different route
