Lorenzo Di Bonaventura Talks Moscow, The Jack Ryan Reboot

Some time ago, it was announced that actor Chris Pine was going to become the lead in the newest Jack Ryan film. A few weeks ago, we learned that Anthony Peckham was hired to tweak the screenplay. Back in April, we heard that the story would involved a Jack Ryan fresh-from-the-Marines, getting caught up in a financial scandal in Russia. In a press junket for RED, Bonaventura talked a little bit about the status.

CinemaBlend reports:

We’re going to shoot in the spring. There’s no set date. It’s a slow process of figuring out how much it’s going to cost and all that stuff. [It’s] the same story– [Peckham] is going to bring his own particular flair to it. It is the origin story of Jack Ryan. Where you pick him up in his career is very true to what Clancy had as his backstory. You can explore some of the backstory you never had in previous movie. That will be fun for Clancy fan, and for an audience that hasn’t seen [the previous films], or seen them all in theaters. Chris Pine is going to make a great Jack Ryan. We really lucked out there.

Asked specifically about what I described as the “Russian finance” plot, di Bonaventura responded, “There will be elements of that. We’re trying to keep it simple. We want the character to breathe, to not be so overwhelmed by the plot.”

So this will be a reboot/prequel of sorts. We will get Ryan’s backstory before he became a hero multiple times. I think people will dig this story, specially with the absence of Jack Bauer in TV and Jason Bourne in more films. I believe Chris Pine will make a great young Jack Ryan, following the line of great actors playing this character. The plot discussed earlier seems too weak, I hope they changed it to something bigger, but that at the same time doesn’t become too complex like Bonaventura says. I don’t know, Ryan in the middle of a russian finance plot just sounds too weak; that’s like Ryan in Wall Street 3. Hopefully it’s changed.

What do you guys think? Ryan battles a Russian Wall Street affair? Your thoughts on Pine becoming a young Ryan?
