Jon Hamm for Superman Rumors Begin Again

Rumors have started once again. They have the studio strongly considering Jon Hamm as Superman in the future reboot. Written by David S. Goyer and godfathered by Christopher Nolan, the Superman reboot is slated for a December 2012 release. Since the reboot was announced, rumors have basically revolved around Hamm and Brandon Routh.

CinemaBlend reports:

TMT has gotten info from “sources” that Hamm is being heavily considered for the next Superman project, which is being written by David S. Goyer and produced by Christopher Nolan. The site does cover itself by saying that Hamm has not yet met with representatives from Warner Bros., nor has a deal been extended to him. Hamm spoke about the role with MTV back in February, and while he didn’t dismiss the notion entirely, he sees a distinctive challenge in the role.
“It’s a tricky road to go down with some of those heroes, because they’re not flawed. Superman is Superman — he’s invincible, so where’s the drama?”

Like I said in the last post about this rumor, Jon Hamm would be an awesome veteran Superman. If Nolan and Goyer go the seasoned Superman route, Hamm would definitely own the role. He has the look and the acting chops to portray Superman in his day to day role as protector. Now, if the plot doesn’t cover Superman like this, then I can see Hamm’s age being a problem; specially if they are going to try to make a franchise/trilogy out of this. One strong option would be to film all films or at least sequels, all back to back. Remember, Hamm is 39 right now. Still, if the role goes to Hamm or Routh, I have no problems.

What do you guys think? Should the story go hand in hand with Hamm’s age? Should Hamm or Routh get the role? Any other actor you would give the role to?

  1. Hamm would OWN as a more manly and mature looking Superman. This film will basically be a one shot Superman film due to the rights issues involving the WB’s and the Siegals.

After this Superman due for release in December 2012, we probably won’t be seeing Superman onscreen again until maaaaaaaybe 2015, in the potential Justice League film!

If Keaton can play a Batman in 1989, and Downey Jr can play a fit Iron Man in his 40’s, and since Hugh Jackman is still playing Wolverine at 40…..a charismatic and talented actor like Jon Hamm would be a solid Superman. He would just need to bulk up and get in Superman shape.

  2. I’m having a tough time believing Hamm in tights and a cape, flying around in the sky. I’d like Hamm in just about any movie… I’m not sure I’m buying this one.

I wonder if The Town will factor into this at all — ie if it does really well and Hamm gets big buzz out of it, maybe this seals the deal, or if it tanks… maybe we get someone else. The thing is… Hamm’s a great actor and leads the best show on TV, but only a fraction of the country watches Mad Men and a lot of people haven’t even heard of it, even in this day and age. Whether Hamm can anchor and sell tickets at a movie is still a huge question.

  3. Why does Superman always have to be a young man? He’s 39, not 109, his age shouldn’t be an issue. He doesn’t look that old.

I just wonder how his Mad Men duties might play into him getting the role. Mad Men doesn’t shoot too many episodes, but timing might be an issue.

  4. I’m all for Jon Hamm as Supes. I think he fits the mold of an “Alex Ross” type Superman. I think it’s high time that a Superman of that mold be seen on the big screen.

    1. If they cast Tom Welling it will be a Smallville movie. They wont.

And Brandon Routh isn’t being considered. They are offering him a token chance at the role, but they will have hundreds auditioning that could prove to do it better and not confuse the audience.

Hamm would be good for an Alex Ross type Superman. Much older mature and established.

  5. Well, honestly, Hamm doesn’t look 39, so I can totally see Hamm signing on for more than one movie. Even if theyy do one every two years, he could do one at 40 and another at 42 and it should be no problem.

An interesting approach, one I doubt they’d go with would be to have a story take place in two eras – Superman as a young hero (portrayed by Routh or someone else) and as a veteran hero (portrayed by Hamm.)

That being said, I’m not a big freak over actor’s ages. As long as a 50 year old isn’t playing a 20 year old, of course. More important are the actor’s ability and portrayal of the character.
