First Look at the Witches of Oz

This strange gem of a film looks to have escaped my notice, and yet another interpretation on the Wizard of Oz is headed to the big screen.

The film follows a grown-up Dorothy Gale, now a successful children’s book author, as she moves from Kansas to present day New York City. Dorothy discovers that her popular novels are based on suppressed childhood memories as the new Wicked Witch of the West arrives in modern day New York to exact her revenge.

The film stars Paulie Rojas as Dorothy Gale, Billy Boyd as Nick Chopper, Eliza Swenson as Billie Westbrook, and Christopher Lloyd as the Wizard of Oz. It also features performances from Mia Sara, Sasha Jackson, Lance Henriksen, Jason Mewes, Jeffrey Combs, Noel Thurman, Sean Astin and Ethan Embry.

Finding out at one point that this might have been an Asylum film (who apparently prides themselves on making bad, cheap, and quickly produced films) just gave me shivers. I am really curious about this film and I would have lost any interest if I knew Asylum would be cutting its corners.

We also have the poster, which is less inspiring than the above clip, but there nonetheless.

I am really looking forward to seeing what they do with this.

  1. I don’t have high hopes for this. Christopher Lloyd is washed up and I find it best to avoid anything involving Jason Mewes. If it’s true that Asylum, at one point, had something to do with this, that pretty much says it all.

    1. This looks awesome!!! As for Asylum. I am pretty sure Leigh Scott was under direction per producers as it was not his company, and was trying to make directing a living. I am super excited for him and his upcoming film nice to see him break out! Cast looks great! Christopher Lloyd is washed up? You might want to go check out his imdb profile …looks as thought he is working more than ever!

  2. Wow, looks pretty awesome. And I love that concept art they showed. If all that is going to be in the movie, then this could be a pretty sweet fantasy film. Looks like they’re going to have a big magic and creature war in the middle of New York at the end of that video or something like that. Plus I just love Billy Boyd and half these other people in the cast. Just hope the story turns out well.

I’ve thought that for some time someone in movie land should revisit the world of Oz, but with a modern feel and at least a bit darker look/feel to it. Glad to see someone finally made that happen.

Todd McFarlane has been trying to get a movie made based on his Twisted Land Of Oz action figure line for some time now. Who knows if it’ll ever happen though. He and Clive Barker’s Tortured Souls, also based on an action figure line they made, has as well been in limbo for a long time.
