Robert Rodriguez’s Barbarealla Remake Is Dead

I’m not a huge Robert Rodriguez fan by any stretch of the imagination, but you do have to hand it to the guy for his willingness to take risks and do some pretty crazy stuff. Even though I much prefer Quentin Tarantino as a director, I found his “Planet Terror” movie VASTLY more entertaining than QT’s “Death Proof” snore fest in Grindhouse.

For some time now Rodriguez has been developing a remake of Barbarella. If you recall, Rose McGowan (Rodriguez’s screw partner) was originally set for the lead role with later rumors surfacing that the studio wanted Jessica Alba for the part (neither of which I was thrilled with).

Well, it’s all moot now. The Barbarella remake is officially dead.

Apparently the studio dropped the project over rising production costs concerns, and then the only place he could get financing was from a German company who wanted him to do production and post-production all in Germany. Rodriguez has 5 kids and didn’t think he could be away overseas that long (good man… I mean… aside from drilling your little bimbo actress behind your wife’s back that is). So that’s it. It’s dead.

With Hollywood being remake happy for recognizable franchises, I have no doubt that we’ll be talking Barbarella again within the next 3-4 years, but probably with other names attached. Too bad… I was kinda curious about this one. (source: JoBlo)

  1. Ah, Robert Rodriquez, the world’s most talented retard. When he’s done making SPy Kids 5 or whatever maybe he can get to work on Sin City 2.

  2. Good, it was going to be a piece of crap anyway. Midevil fantasy is not Rodriguez’s style. And that shows with his choice for the lead of Barbarella.

  3. It’s wierd but I didn’t like Planet Terror but found Deathproof to be an awesome movie.

I myself never saw the doubble feature but each movie independently without the added fake trailers.

I thought deathproof as a standalone film to be very entertaining.

My girlfriend also had a ball with the movie… Go figure :)

    1. I agree with you on death proof. I enjoyed planet terror a lot as well, but I thought death proof was solid through and through. The car chases and stunts were amazing and the dialogue didn’t bug me one bit. Especially the bar scene with the first batch of girls and kurt russels interaction with them.

  4. You had the opportunity to talk about Barbarella (maybe for the last time in a long time) and you put his mug up there instead of Rose McGowan in lingerie?

    So disappointed.

  5. This guy is one of the most talented filmmakers in hollywood notice i didn’t say directors.

Yes his a good director but he can also do music produce edit and director of photography and for him it works.

and he writes sure he is not the best writer but he is really good at writing and he can do the hardest thing dialogue.

Anyways I would like to know as well what is up? Is this filmmaker making anything right now?

  6. Yeah, what’s been up with this guy? He hasn’t done anything since Planet Terror and I keeping hearing about these other projects(Barbarella (canned), Machete, and Red Sonja) and hear nothing about them?

I thought Rodriguez was already divorced from his wife before he started banging McGowan.
