Serenity Will see Space Once More!

Firefly fans around the world itch their souls wishing there was more than the modest season of Firefly or at very least a sequel to the theatrical movie Serenity. But sadly there just wasn’t enough interest to keep Whedon’s space western afloat.

But in tribute, Serenity made it on the short list of names to christen the new International Space Station node 3. And voters are strongly leaning towards Serenity for the win!

NASA asked for the public’s help in naming the International Space Station’s Node 3, which is “a connecting module and its cupola.” (Space nerds, feel free to explain in the comments.) As the very alert Sarah Jaffe at Newsarama pointed out, NASA states: “The name should reflect the spirit of exploration and cooperation embodied by the space station, and follow in the tradition set by Node 1- Unity- and Node 2- Harmony.” Their choices include Earthrise, Legacy, Venture, and … Serenity!

Currently in the voting Serenity is at 86%. The rest of the names in competition are sitting at a cozy tie at 4-5%.

The Browncoats have come forward in force to offer up their tribute to the series. I just wish that there was enough of this when the show was on the air or in theaters!

You can’t take the sky from me…

  1. @ bigsampson,

Can’t disagree with you on the film too much. Having watched the series on TV previously, the movie lacked for me. I still enjoyed it, but it just fell rushed and like Whedon was trying to put closure to the TV series since he never had the chance. I agree that there were a lot of holes and the story jumped, but probably moreso for those who had not watched the series first.

  2. Yea, that headline was damn cruel! I was fooled as well, I guess wishing for another Serenity or The Verse to return is fruitless at this point. I cant understand why Whedon is so against The Verse returning, it is the finest series he has done even if the fan base was small.

I have to admit that so far Doll House hasnt really impressed me that much, it could take a few more shows for it to grow on me. I can appreciate all the hot ladies on the show, etc. But at some point I am gonna need a reason to keep watching.

  3. please God generate enough hype for a sequel. I would punch a vicious looking hobo in the face if i knew it would bring about a sequel to that fantastic piece of film.

    1. Oh man… my heart skipped several beats when I read that headline as well, though the spaceship thing is pretty darn cool.

I know several people that have seen Serenity before and after watching through all of Firefly, and they all agree that the film is far more enjoyable when you know the characters the way you do after seeing the series.

Dollhouse is ok enough so far, but what I wouldn’t give to bring back Firefly…

  4. serenity sucked IMO …only people who liked it where fanboys which alone drops its cred…it was a story that had to many wholes and started out in one direction only to change complete direction on the storyline…plus i seen better cpu aided graffix on a sci fi channel b movie…sure the movie had some cute moments but really it was super hokey and did not IMO have any deffining moments that made it differant then anything else i have seen…

    1. The only people who liked Serenity… were Firefly fanboys?

Damning, I’d say. A film comes out that’s based on a TV show, has the same cast and writers, and follows the storyline of the show- and it has the exact same fanbase? Must be awful.

    2. I don’t usually try to sway anyone who is not a fan of a film/TV show/form of entertainment, but “Firefly” was a truly under appreciated series. The characters were rich, deep and thoroughly developed through the life of the show. The idea was great – correlating the concept of pioneering space with the idea of pioneering the old west while depicting a future in which the main Earth-That-Was superpowers (China and the U.S.) were so dominating that people drifted in and out of the two languages like modern-day Spanglish. It wasn’t the typical sci-fi show: explosions in space made no noise, there were no alien races and hand-held laser guns were looked upon as relics of a failed techno-fad. And the movie, while remaining incredibly faithful to the storyline of the show, had the testicular fortitude to kill off MAIN characters (not red shirts) in a way that made the audience feel that ANY character was fair game. Nobody was untouchable. And by not following a formula we’ve all seen a million times, the film was unpredictable. I mean, you know Batman’s going to live; you know James Bond is going to come out on top; you know Captain Kirk’s not going to die. But with Serenity, you really had no idea. And that was one of the many things that made it a great movie.

    3. I had never watched an episode of Firefly before I saw the movie. Didn’t see the film in theaters but rented it… liked it… watched the series on DVD… frigging LOVED IT. Amazing show.

    4. Another person who did not watch the entire series and come to appreciate the relationship between the characters or the interesting story lines.

Spell check is your friend by the way :-)

  5. holy shit, my heart dropped when I read that headline! I was about to freak out. Sadly, it wasn’t what I thought.

Still, a pretty cool story that will hopefully get some of the right minds thinking some of the right thoughts about Malcolm Reynolds and his crew.
